Meditation for Beginners offers the central trainings and teachings found in the best Buddhist monasteries translated for Western society. In Meditation for Beginnings, you will find some of the simplest and most universal of the practices of meditation-in particular, the practices of mindfulness and lovingkindness.
The point of these teachings has nothing to do with becoming a Buddhist, or learning any Eastern ceremonies or rituals or bowing. The point is that you learn how to work with meditation in order to find benefits from it in your life. When we take time to quiet ourselves, we can all sense that our lives could be lived with greater compassion and greater wakefulness. To meditate is to support this inner potential and allow it to come forth into our lives.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2024The book contains a general introduction to the principles of meditation, and provides a series of six progressive exercises to lead one into the actual practice.
Each exercise is given a descriptive text describing purpose and procedure, and the CD included in the book provides, for each of the exercises, the voice of the author actually leading it.
For a total beginner like myself, this is a particularly well thought out and useful introduction to meditation principles and procedures.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2014I loved this book, it's short and to the point. Sometimes when you see how long a book is, it's hard to stay motivated to finish unless the book is so well written that it draws you in to keep reading it.
I especially found the food meditation very interesting. We hardly pay attention to what we're eating, we are always in a rush in this modern time. And with some jobs we have a very short time to finish our meal and then get back to he grind. With the food meditation you are instructed to pay attention to your food, not only will you be meditating but this method can also help you get healthier by hearing your body tell you when it has had enough.
Another interesting point is the one about the fly on the nose, it was very coincidental for me, as I had just heard another article about another such incident involving a fly. What do we do when a fly lands on our body? The first instinct is to swat it away, or try to kill it. It's a very important point about the way we live, we are always either avoiding pain or inconvenience or seeking pleasure, but we are hardly just being. I highly recommend this book, and I highly recommend you mediate every day, the benefits are limitless and it will only take you a few minutes a day. - Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2015This is a lovely little book to read, ponder, savor and share. If you're just getting started with meditation, this is the guide for you. The CD provides very soothing and easy-to-follow meditation steps, and each one is under 12 minutes, which is just perfect for a morning routine. There is no religious dogma, no new-age mystery, just straight-up and practical steps to follow. The start of a new life and a new perspective on everything is right here.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2015This book is exactly as titled. Meditation for Beginners. I have been practicing and teaching mediation for quite some time, and am currently using this book and CD in the Behavioral Health Center for children I work at. I bought this book and CD to help me facilitate meditation classes when I can not be there for class due to other job responsibilities. Last class I could not be present. I gave the cd to a entry level staff member and asked him to facilitate the class for me by playing the CD, which he did. I followed up with him today and the children and they loved it. The message and instruction was very easy to follow. I instructed the staff member to only do the first meditation because I wasn't sure if the kids were prepared for the other meditations. Well, after the first meditation the kids begged him to let them do more. Turns out that these kids with ADHD, Aggression, Impulse Control, Depression, PTSD, you name it they ended up meditating for over 30 minutes (willingly!!) and were able to do it without a qualified teacher present.
I would suggest this book to anyone who is BRAND NEW to meditation or someone who is trying to introduce meditation to children.
Wonderful! Very Pleased! I know Kornfield went to India with Jon Kabat Zin, Lama Surya Das, and that whole crew back in the 70's. Well he is definetly talented.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2017Jack is my guru whether he knows it or not. Jack Kornfield is one of the most renowned meditation teachers in the West and explains the art of meditation in such a simple way that is easy to understand as a beginner to meditation. Learning to meditate can be overwhelming for a beginner with there being so many methods and loose uses of the term but this book explains it in its essence. It explains how to be intentional in meditation as well as different types of meditation like mindfulness and meta. I have since passed this book on to many loved ones who still practice thanks to the teachings in this book. The CD included has many great guided meditations that are helpful. Jack's voice naturally inspires compassion and meta in the hearts of anyone who listens. I am grateful that this book exists
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2023This is my first attempt at meditation. I like this book because it gives just enough information to get started without getting bogged down in details.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2024Expected some to talk as a meditation leader....not no sound for much of CD for each section of book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2012Meditation simplified, this is like the skeleton to the body of consciousness, it gives structure and support to really centering and allowing yourself to find peace and true power. Connection to your higher self is the most important aspect of living and is the point from which all else flourishes. This book is the corner stone. I cannot say enough good things about it - just be sure the CD is included if you buy one used. From the author of...[...]
