The Case for Christ: A Journalist's Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 12,904 ratings

Is there credible proof that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God? In The Case for ChristLee Strobel, former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune and New York Times bestselling author, retraces his own spiritual journey from atheism to faith and builds a captivating case for Christ's divinity.

In this revised and updated edition of The Case for Christ, Strobel cross-examines a dozen experts with doctorates from schools such as Cambridge, Princeton, and Brandeis, asking hard-hitting questions--and taking a deeper look at the evidence from the fields of science, philosophy, and history.

In his comprehensive investigation, Strobel doesn't shy away from challenging questions, including:

  • How reliable is the New Testament?
  • Does evidence for Jesus exist outside the Bible?
  • Is Jesus who he said he was?
  • Is there any reason to believe the resurrection was an actual event?
  • What does all of the evidence point to--and what does it mean today?

Winner of the Gold Medallion Book Award and twice nominated for the Christian Book of the Year Award, The Case for Christ has been adapted into a major motion picture and has now sold over 5 million copies worldwide.

This edition includes scores of revisions and additions, including updated material on archaeological and manuscript discoveries, fresh recommendations for further study, and an interview with the author that tells dramatic stories about the book's impact, provides behind-the-scenes information, and responds to critiques of the book by skeptics.

Strobel's thorough examination reads like a captivating, fast-paced novel. But it's not fiction: it's a riveting quest for the truth about history's most compelling figure. Discover The Case for Christ today.

Praise for The Case for Christ:

"Nobody knows how to sift truth from fiction like an experienced investigative reporter, or to argue a case like someone trained at Yale Law School. Lee Strobel brings both qualifications to this remarkable book. In addition to his own tremendous testimony as atheist-turned-Christian, the author marshals the irrefutable depositions of recognized "expert witnesses" to build his ironclad case for Jesus Christ. The Case for Christ sets a new standard among existing contemporary apologetics."

My Journey from Skeptic to Believer

I considered myself an atheist. To me, there was far too much evidence that God was merely a product of wishful thinking, of ancient mythology, of primitive superstition.

My wife Leslie stunned me in the autumn of 1979 by announcing that she had become a Christian, so I launched an all-out investigation into the facts surrounding the case for Christianity.

Setting aside my self-interest and prejudices as best I could, I read books, interviewed experts, asked questions, analyzed history, explored archaeology, studied ancient literature, and for the first time in my life picked apart the Bible verse by verse.

I plunged into the case with more vigor than with any story I had ever pursued. I applied the training I had received at Yale Law School as well as my experience as legal affairs editor of the Chicago Tribune. And over time the evidence of the world—of history, of science, of philosophy, of psychology—began to point toward the unthinkable.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The Case for Christ records Lee Strobel's attempt to "determine if there's credible evidence that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God." The book consists primarily of interviews between Strobel (a former legal editor at the Chicago Tribune) and biblical scholars such as Bruce Metzger. Each interview is based on a simple question, concerning historical evidence (for example, "Can the Biographies of Jesus Be Trusted?"), scientific evidence, ("Does Archaeology Confirm or Contradict Jesus' Biographies?"), and "psychiatric evidence" ("Was Jesus Crazy When He Claimed to Be the Son of God?"). Together, these interviews compose a case brief defending Jesus' divinity, and urging readers to reach a verdict of their own.

Review

If you were a journalist, how would you handle a news story so big it would utterly eclipse all other world events? How thorough would your investigation be? How many hard-hitting questions would you ask? How carefully would you consult with top experts to get detailed, accurate answers?

Lee Strobel knows firsthand. It was as an award-winning reporter for the Chicago Tribune and an avowed atheist that he first investigated the greatest news story of all the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, in The Case for Christ, he presents compelling evidence and expert testimony for the claims of Christianity. As a seasoned journalist with a Yale law background, Strobel systematically tracks down his leads and asks the blunt, tough questions you would want to ask questions that can make or break the Christian faith. He refuses contrived, simplistic answers. Instead, he pieces together hard facts through interviews with a dozen of the country s top scholars.

Written in the style of a blockbuster investigative report, The Case for Christ is a provocative and spellbinding read, marshaling expert testimony and persuasive evidence. With unerring instincts, Strobel ferrets out: ? Historical Evidence: Do we possess reliable documents concerning the life, teachings, and resurrection of Jesus? ? Scientific Evidence: Is there archaeological substantiation for the historical accounts about Jesus? Did Jesus perform miracles? ? Psychiatric Evidence: Did Jesus really claim to be God? What evidence is there that he fit God s profile? ? Fingerprint Evidence: What does prophecy have to say about Jesus? ? Other Evidence: Jesus death, the missing body, eyewitness accounts, and claims of personal encounters.

The Case for Christ reads like a captivating, fast-paced novel. But it s not fiction. It s a riveting journey to the truth about the most remarkable event in history: the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And it s a revealing, personal testimony to his power to transform people yet today even the most case-hardened, cynical journalist. Also available on audio cassette. Lee Strobel, with a Master of Studies in Law degree from Yale Law School, was an award-winning journalist for thirteen years at the Chicago Tribune and other newspapers. He was a spiritual skeptic until 1981. Today he serves as teaching pastor at Willow Creek Community Church in suburban Chicago. He is the best-selling author of Inside the Mind of Unchurched Harry and Mary, What Jesus Would Say, and God s Outrageous Claims. This is a must-read for believers and nonbelievers
I decided to order this book after watching the movie on PureFlix a few months ago. It definitely caught my interest with the author's story behind it and his research- enough for me want to read all of the books that he has written. The book arrived in great condition, aside from a minor flaw on the back cover. The print and font is VERY comfortable for my eyesight; I haven't been reading as much as I used to, because I tend to take frequent breaks if my eyes start to hurt (even wearing glasses). But I've had no issues with reading it at all.I must say that I've immensely enjoyed reading this book so far... The author, Lee Stroebel, is a highly intelligent man that has a very no-nonsense approach that I can admire. He's applied all of his knowledge from investigative journalism and law education, into seeking the truth about the life and resurrection of Jesus. His methods and innumerable amounts of information are thoroughly detailed, with intensity at times, as a former skeptic/ atheist. What's more, is that this investigative journey saved his marriage and turned him into a believer.I'd consider this book to be a must-read, for believers and non-believers alike (even if they'd be curious to look into the history by itself). I used to consider myself to be Agnostic, and I didn't have real spiritual beliefs until a few years ago. But even now, I've still struggled to focus on the timelines. This book has brought so much clarity to that, just within the first few chapters. If anyone would be interested in finding proof of Jesus from a person with a modernly real, cut-throat journalistic perspective, then I'd definitely recommend this book... It's fantastic.

Lee Strobel’s The Case for Christ is nothing short of a transformative read, one that blends investigative journalism with the rigor of historical and scientific inquiry. As a former atheist and seasoned legal journalist, Strobel embarks on a journey to examine the evidence for Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. What unfolds is a compelling narrative that not only addresses skeptics’ questions but also strengthens the faith of believers.

The book is structured as a series of interviews with experts in theology, archaeology, history, and medicine. Strobel approaches these conversations as though preparing for a courtroom trial, weighing the evidence objectively. The historical evidence presented, including manuscripts, archaeological discoveries, and eyewitness accounts, is meticulously detailed. Strobel's exploration of the reliability of the New Testament documents, the corroboration of non-Christian sources, and the medical analysis of the crucifixion leaves readers with a profound sense of awe at the historical authenticity of Christ’s life and sacrifice.

What makes this book so eye-opening is its ability to dismantle common objections with clarity and grace. Strobel doesn’t shy away from tough questions. Instead, he leans into them, presenting answers rooted in fact and logic. For those grappling with doubts or simply seeking to deepen their understanding of the Christian faith, The Case for Christ is a balm for the soul, much like witnessing the miraculous healing of a terminal illness. Strobel’s thorough investigation can cure spiritual uncertainty, offering hope and assurance to those searching for truth.

In addition to its apologetic depth, the book is written in an engaging, almost conversational tone, making complex ideas accessible without oversimplifying them. It invites readers into Strobel’s personal journey, making the discovery of truth feel personal and relatable.

Ultimately, The Case for Christ is a must-read for skeptics, seekers, and believers alike. It equips Christians with a stronger foundation for their faith while offering a lifeline to those searching for answers. Strobel’s work is a testament to the fact that faith and reason can coexist powerfully. If you’re looking for a book that inspires, educates, and transforms, this is it.

I've been atheist my whole life, dabbling in different philosophies and religions. It took a good deal of trouble in my life, but I started to look into Christianity more and more. This book was a huge pull for me to accept God in my life and see the truth of Jesus Christ. It felt like I was on the journey with Strobel. It's a quick read but a deep read. I'd recommend it to "Christian curious," believers, and non-believers--all of the above.

Before I was persuaded to read this book, I was under the impression, as it appears that many are, that Strobel was converted from atheism while conducting his "Case for Christ". This is not the reality of the situation and Strobel makes no attempt to hide this fact. In the introduction Strobel writes, "That's what this book is about. In effect, I'm going to retrace and expand upon the spiritual journey I took for nearly two years." (p. 14). It is no mystery that by the time he began conducting the interviews for this book Strobel was already a Christian. Where does one turn if they want the most scholarly information about Jesus Christ as shown in a Christian light? Well...Christian scholars, of course. This book is biased by the fact that only Christians are referenced in the research conducted for this work but, after all, the purpose of this work is to convey the outcome of Strobel's personal investigation. One would have to believe that it was Strobel's goal to clearly depict the end result of his own research, rather than to jumble the intended message with contradictory opinions and fact. "The Case for Christ" is an amazing stepping stone for individuals interested in further intellectual research into Christianity. Strobel consulted some of the most respected and credible scholars in their fields of study while coming to his ultimate conclusion. The information that Strobel made available throughout this work would have translated into an incredible amount of reading and research if one attempted to obtain the same information on their own, not to insinuate that one should take this information as the final authority. The fact that all of Strobel's references are believers in the Christian faith does nothing to belittle the fact that the information they divulge is to the best of their knowledge as respected scholars. In other words, the interviewees say nothing that they believe or know to be a proven falsehood.

In "The Case for Christ", Lee Strobel sets out to determine whether or not Jesus Christ was who he claimed to be, or if he even existed. Strobel effectively presents the evidence for this "case" as it might have been presented in a court of law. Strobel applied the knowledge that he obtained at Yale Law School and his experience as the legal affairs editor of the Chicago Tribune to present the information he obtained in this well thought out and extremely readable book. The importance of this work is the fact that the entire Christian religion hinges on whether or not Jesus Christ was the person portrayed in the Christian Bible and Strobel realizes this. As far as the information surrounding Jesus' existence, his life, and his death, Strobel leaves no stone unturned. To further illustrate his point, Strobel is often found playing the devil's advocate...no pun intended...by posing some of the leading arguments against what his references are claiming to be true, and then asking them to provide an answer. While some of the issues attended to in "The Case for Christ" are hot topics in religious debate today; the arguments provided by Strobel's interviewees are just as convincing and though provoking as those that could be found in any intellectual argument for or against Jesus Christ.

"The Case for Christ" is certainly a compelling read and I would recommend that anyone, of any religion or lack thereof, use the information it provides and apply it however one chooses. This is a pro-Christian work and should be looked at as such, but for those who are either new believers in the Christian faith or simply looking for a little guidance in their search for the big questions, Strobel provides a great deal of insight that one might not come across on their own. "The Case for Christ" is well written and unlike many books of this genre, resists the urge to force feed its information and opinions to people who are not, as of yet, ready to commit their life in one direction or the other.
