He is also a leader in the field of historic preservation in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State. He has owned, managed or was instrumental in the preservation of several Adirondack “Great Camps”—multi-building compounds of rustic, architecturally distinguished buildings listed as National Historic Landmarks. He wrote three books about these places: Sagamore, Santanoni and White Pine Camp. He was founder and first president of Adirondack Architectural Heritage, the non-profit, historic preservation organization for the Adirondack Park.
Sidney B. Simon is internationally known for his pioneering work in Values Clarification, now retired as Professor Emeritus from the University of Massachusetts. Over 100 articles and some 13 books authored or co-authored came out of that adventurous academic life.
Smon was a guest expert on the Oprah Show, and also shared his wisdom on a Phil Donahue program about Fathers and Sons.
More recently, he has been active in a Florida literary arts community. Simon is a drama critic for the SANIBEL CAPTIVA ISLANDER, and a participant for the past five years in ART POEMS.
His just published book, LIVING AND LOVING IN THAT CONDO WITH A VIEW OF THE GULF, is a rich tapestry of story poems about people growing older in a mythical condo in Florida.
Dr. Leland W. Howe received his M.S.W and Ph.D. from Michigan State University and served as a Professor of Psychological Education at Temple University for ten years. He is the author and co-author of numerous books and professional articles, including the worldwide bestseller, Values Clarification, which received the Pi Lambda Theta Outstanding Book of the Year Award in 1973. While teaching at Temple University, Dr. Howe received the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching.
Upon leaving Temple University, Dr. Howe completed an advanced training program in Bioenergetic Analysis and was certified as a Bioenergetics Therapist and a Local Trainer in Bioenergetics for the Society of Bioenergetic Analysis in Rochester, Michigan. At that time he also started a private practice in Bioenergetic Analysis in East Lansing, Michigan.
Dr. Howe currently lives in Grand Ledge, Michigan with his wife Sandy Eyre, where he has a private practice and conducts research and does trainings on a revolutionary new healing process using body wisdom and spontaneous energetic movement, called Spontaneous Energetic Healing™.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2019I had this book for years and wanted to buy it for a colleague who is new to the clinical field. It's great for group counseling or exploring values during individual counseling activities. Some of the activities get clients so engaged that they forget we are in a staged or simulated activity, so much dialogue come out. This book does evaluate values and allows the therapist/counselor clarify the essence of their feelings.
You can't go wrong with this book every professional should have this on their shelf.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2021I've been looking for something that would provide me with the type of thought provoking questions/activities needed to help me narrow down/fully grasp exactly which of my personal core values are most important to me and why, and this book was everything I was hoping to find and more!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2016Excellent source for helping people know their values on a variety of issues; the exercises are fun; they really help people understand each other.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2014I'm now 10 years retired from teaching high school English. My copy of Values Clarification is ultra tattered and boxed up somewhere in our garage (we live in a small mountain cabin and half of what we own is stored). For many years I used many of the activities from the book to break up and diversify instruction and to get kids to think about the affective domain. New teachers may not know what that means since No Child Left Behind has sterilized the teaching profession as well as kids' brains. Now all I have to do is figure out new ways to use the activities with adults or in my substituting--on days when scant plans have been left by regular teacher (which seldom happens). I am pleased with the new teachers being hired today at my old school.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2015This is definitely the most comprehensive book I have ever found on the topic. Each chapter is brimming with countless questions to help you clarify your values in a multitude of areas. As a clinical psychologist, I have recommended this to many clients.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2016There are some good thought in the book, but it is very culturally specific to the point of being irritating. Interesting in an anthropological way though if you want to understand how different Americans are from the rest of the world.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2017I use this book every year in my classroom with high schoolers--especially at the end of the year. It is engaging, fun, and validates their morals and beliefs.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2014I ordered the book listed, and received a really older version of the book. Very misleading! I deserve a refund!

5.0 out of 5 stars Explains values
I was not aware of values before but there are plenty of exercises to make you conscious of what is an unconscious activity. Great.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor
It is a waste of time because I was looking for exercises to clarify values but What I found is very lousy stuff to fill the book pages.
