Dave Asprey has built a biohacking movement.

However, he wasn't always the model of optimal health. His journey started under dire circumstances. After years of working in Silicon Valley as an investor and technology entrepreneur, Asprey's health rapidly declined. Eventually, he became obese, reaching 300 pounds.

It was at this point that he started hacking his body. He ended up losing over 100 pounds and drastically improved his physical, mental, and emotional health. Today, he is the author of a number of New York Times best-selling books, the creator of Bulletproof coffee and the Founder of Bulletproof Upgrade Labs.

I had the opportunity to interview Dave Asprey about how he built his biohacking movement. We talk about some of his favorite biohacks that will help you optimize your life. Let's dive in!

Do you mind sharing your story and how you started this biohacking movement?

I used to weigh 300 pounds and I had most of the diseases of aging in my 20s. On the same note, I also made $6 million dollars when I was 26 and lost all of it when I was 28.

It gave me the opportunity to say, “I'm done being fat and tired all of the time.”

The doctors didn't have anything to say that was useful to me, so I decided to hack my body. I spent $1 million dollars hacking my biology because I wanted to figure out how I could reverse my aging process. That's what I've been able to do for myself.

How did the Bulletproof coffee idea come about?

For twenty years I ran an anti-aging non-profit group in Silicon Valley. I was learning from people who were 2-3 times my age who were trying to figure out how to reverse the aging process. They didn't talk to the meditation people or the neuroscientists. As I was working on fixing my own stuff, I decided that I was going to go learn meditation from the masters.

One of the reasons why meditation is so cool today is because ten years ago, nobody would admit that they meditated. If you were an executive in Silicon Valley who said you did yoga and meditation, you would be considered to be an alien. I wanted to make meditation cool because I knew it worked; so I went to Tibet. While I was there, I visited Mount Kailash which is the holiest mountain in the world.

At 18,000 feet and 10,000 degrees below zero I felt horrible. A little Tibetan woman gave me a cup of yak butter tea. I drank it and instantly my brain turned on. It was amazing, so I went back to Silicon Valley and tried putting butter in my coffee. The taste was horrible so I started to experiment with different kinds of butter, teas, and coffees. Eventually, I found something that worked and designed Bulletproof coffee.

Then I created the term, biohacking and developed a movement around it.

My intention was to get the anti-aging people on board – navy seals, bodybuilders, powerlifters, pro athletes, medical professionals, astronaut trainers, and neuroscientists – so that they would start talking about this movement. Last year, Miriam Webster added biohacking to the dictionary as a new word in the English language. Today, there are millions of people who identify themselves as biohackers.

What are some of the simplest biohacks for someone who is new to biohacking?

The key to biohacking is understanding that your body doesn't do a very good job of listening to you. Rather, it listens to the world around you and what it perceives to be threats. One of the things that chew up your energy throughout the day is thinking and obsessing about food.

What if you could do something so that after you finished a meal, you didn't think about food until the next meal. The voice inside of your head is unnecessary and hugely distracting. You want to notice how you feel after your first meal. If you're hungry after one hour of eating, you did it wrong, meaning that you ate something that caused inflammation inside of your body. You found a food that is incompatible with your system.

There is no universal diet for human beings.

The first simple biohacking rule is to stop eating the stuff that makes you weak. Inside of my book, The Bulletproof Diet: Lose Up to a Pound a Day, Reclaim Energy and Focus, Upgrade Your Life, I provide you with a free roadmap that shows you the proteins, fats, carbs, and vegetables that are safe for almost everybody.

I also provide a list of suspect foods. For a lot of people, these foods cause problems. Did you know that kale creates sugar cravings? Or that one-third of rheumatoid arthritis is caused by potatoes and tomatoes? I know this sounds crazy, but it's true.

The second biohack is related to sleep. I've been tracking my sleep for ten years with electronics. My favorite device that I use is called the Oura ring. Even if I only get 6 hours of sleep, I'm still getting deeper REM sleep than the average 20-year-old who gets 8 hours. Hence, my sleep efficiency is off the charts.

How you can biohack your sleep?

One of my favorite things I do to biohack my sleep is wearing TrueDark blue light filtering sunglasses. I wear them during the day. In the latter half of the day, blue light messes with your sleep. One hour before bed I switch to sleep glasses called TrueDark sunsets which allows me to double my deep sleep.

If you don't want to purchase these glasses, black out your windows.

Secondly, put a piece of electrical tape over every LED light in your room, especially the green, blue and yellow lights. Lastly, turn your thermostat down to 68 degrees. This sends a signal to your body that it's nighttime. That combination will have you waking up feeling like a new person.

What are some of your favorite technologies that have made the biggest impact on your life?

In terms of the simple and affordable stuff, there's an app called Sonic Sleep which plays a sound that blocks out noises in your sleep environment. I play this at night.

At Upgrade Labs we have something called The REDCharger. This is a red and infrared light bed that exposes your entire body to red and infrared LED light. It turns out that the cells in your skin are sensitive to certain wavelengths of red and infrared light. If you lie on this bed, it adds electrons into your body.

There is also something called pulsed electromagnetic field therapy.

The PEMF machine sends an electromagnetic frequency directly into the cells so that the cells can absorb it and start to function at their optimal level. It turns out that all of our willpower comes from the basic ability of our cells to convert food and air into energy. If you can do this better, you will get more electrons into your body, which will translate into more willpower. The more energy that you have means the better you will be to repair injuries and take care of the system that supports you.

What does your morning ritual consist of?

When you have kids, your morning ritual shifts a lot. Whenever you wake up to do something, they will sense it and also wake up.

I wake up with my phone on airplane mode and I take a handful of supplements on an empty stomach. From there, I make my Bulletproof coffee and sit down to eat breakfast with my family.

Shortly after that, I drive my kids to school.

When I drop them off, I take my phone off of airplane mode and see if there's anything urgent I need to attend to. At this point, I do 45 minutes of upgrade time, whether that's cryotherapy, meditation or PEMF therapy.

What is next for you?

I've got a new book called, Superhuman: The Bulletproof Plan to Age Backward and Maybe Even Live Forever. Inside the book you will learn what I'm doing in my life to ensure that I live until 180 years old. We know that people can live until at least 120 years of age.

They were able to do this without understanding how their bodies work. For twenty years I've been working with people to unlock the secrets of aging and they are actually doing it now! I have a lot of cool stuff to do and problems to solve and I would like to have the energy to do them until I'm done.
