Starting a business is a major life decision.
If you find yourself heading in the wrong direction, you owe it to yourself to shift your course. Transitioning from a 9 to 5 job to becoming an entrepreneur is a big deal. If the thought of leaving your day job freaks you out, that's totally normal. Changing the direction of your entire life is no joke.
When I decided to leave the rat race and take the leap into entrepreneurship, it wasn't exactly a smooth ride, but I still dove in. That's all that matters. I made the choice to take a road less traveled. It was a scary feeling at first, but it was the best decision I've ever made because it allowed me to live in alignment with my life purpose.
Being an entrepreneur isn’t an easy path for anyone. It's a risky venture to take. Research shows that 90 percent of new online businesses fail in the first four months. No wonder the fear of failure is so high amongst aspiring entrepreneurs. The great news is that you can make friends with your fear instead of allowing it to overpower your life.
The fact of the matter is that there will never be an ideal time to start a business. If you shy away from things that make you feel uncomfortable, you will always live in fear. A comfort zone feels good, but it won't make you grow. Smooth sailing never wins the race. You've got to be willing to do the unthinkable, and believe that anything is possible.
In his book, The Psychology of Winning: Ten Qualities of a Total Winner, Denis Waitley says that it's not just talent, hard work, and/or luck that makes a super performer. Rather, it’s the mindset that determines whether they succeed or fail.
The problem is that your brain wants you to fail.
The only purpose of your brain is to keep you safe and protected. It will constantly make you doubt every opportunity that comes your way. Fortunately, you can rewire your brain to stop protecting you. The best way to do this is by embracing failure.
If you want to be successful in life, you have to accept that failure is just a steppingstone towards figuring things out. Failure is what allows you to develop the resilience to keep moving forward no matter how many times you get knocked down. This is why I encourage you to fail forward on a daily basis. This means taking risks, improving your skills, and learning from your mistakes.
When it comes to starting a business, nobody has all of the answers. The worst thing that you can do is not try. Sometimes you've just got to take a chance, get in the game and start doing something. Don't wait for the perfect moment to start your business. Rather, just take one step forward. That's how you will find your groove.
Don't let the fear of starting a business hold you back.
On the other side of fear is everything you've always wanted. The only way that you will overcome fear is if you are willing to take action in spite of it. As Henry Ford once said, “One of the greatest discoveries a man makes is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do.”
What would you do if you weren't afraid? Now is the time to make your dreams of becoming an entrepreneur a reality.
