Will Ripley has a passion for music.

However, when he first started teaching people how to play the guitar he knew nothing about business or marketing. His story is proof that, if you have the drive and motivation to succeed, it is possible to turn a passion into a profitable career. In my interview with Will, we spoke about his journey to success and how he has been able to build a 6-figure online business from the ground up. Let's dive in!

How were you able to turn your passion into a successful online business?

It all started with an insane passion for music and guitar. When I was young someone told me to pick something that I do for free, learn everything I can about it, and then try to make money from it. Luckily, that's what I was able to do. Fast forward to now and I'm very grateful that millions of people from all over the world have resonated with my YouTube channel and my online guitar lesson delivery.

How did you go from teaching in-person guitar lessons to developing online courses?

Before teaching guitar I was working at a music store. Unfortunately, it was a minimum wage position. However, I did learn salesmanship tactics while working there. In particular, I learned how to sell equipment and interact with people.

Before I knew it, I was moving $50-60,000 dollars of guitar equipment every month. However, I was only making $15 per hour. I knew that if I were to teach guitar lessons, I could literally quadruple my hourly wage. Doing so would give me more time in my day to work on my craft and make as much, if not more, money.

I hit the streets and started putting flyers up all over the city.

My brother helped me with SEO which helped people find me online. Over time, I started getting phone calls and emails. That was the first step. The second step was to get people in front of me. Each of those tasks was challenging. The thing that made me realize that I was onto something special was that people wanted to come back for more.

Before I knew it, I was teaching five days a week and had a waitlist of students. I had made more money than I ever had in my entire life. My goal was to work less, make more money, and reach more people. Eventually, I created an online course where I took people, via video, through my step-by-step beginner guitar lesson system.

After you created your online course, what was the process that you went through to launch it?

Everything was ready and I launched my online course to 100 people on my email list. Unfortunately, I made zero sales. I could have very easily got discouraged but I didn't. I ended up connecting with a company called Guitar Control.

Somehow, I spoke with enough passion that they became interested in what I had to offer.

We ended up calling the course 5 Minute Guitar, which is a pretty hot title. Luckily, they promoted the course for me through their email list. We made $25,000 dollars in sales. Coming from ground zero, it gave me the boost that I needed to continue with my guitar course and system.

Can you share some of the success that you’ve had with affiliate marketing and how that has helped your business?

You introduced me to Roger Love who has a great singing program. For guitar players, a singing program is very beneficial. After going through your Affiliate Marketing Mastery course, I was able to launch a successful affiliate marketing campaign to my guitar community. I'm stoked that I was able to offer them an awesome singing course and make money while I do it.

Any advice you would give to someone who is brand new to the world of Internet marketing?

The first thing that comes to mind is to watch Gary Vaynerchuk's videos on Instagram. He will get you fired up. His message is always consistent – “Be patient, don't care about what others think, and do work that you're passionate about.”

I hate to break it to you, but there is no get-rich-quick-scheme out there.

Don't fall for the scams. Add a lot of value and give people great content in your area of expertise. Also, know that you will suck when you're first starting out, even if it's the best piece of content that you've released, to-date. Building a business takes time.
