Why do you believe that self-education is more important than ever before?
General knowledge doesn't serve the world anymore, especially when it comes to education. There is a trending term going around on the Internet that says, “By the time the ink is dry on your diploma, the knowledge that you learned is already outdated.” If you want to go to another level of success and impact and live a life of abundance, there are only three ways to get there.
First, you could get more general knowledge.
Hence, you could go back to school. Unfortunately, it's a broken industry. I'm not knocking the teachers. However, the education industry hasn't been able to keep up with the growing world of technology.
Second, you can learn through your own trial and error. When those two things don't work, the only thing left is self-education.
This is all about learning from non-professional teachers who are willing to share what they know for the purpose of helping you go faster. Last year, Tony and I shared our KBB program. It's now in 150 countries and over 25,000 people strong. We've identified over 4,300 niches comprised of people who are saying, “I do have a skill and an area of expertise.”
Do you mind sharing how you define a mastermind?
In 1937 Napoleon Hill said that “A mastermind is when two minds come together, share what they know, and collectively a third mind is created.” A Mastermind Group is the collaboration of capabilities where a group of people is solving a problem and delivering value through their own experiences. It's collective wisdom. Everyone gets smarter as a result of being together. Forbes says that the knowledge industry is heading towards $1 billion a day by 2025. It's one of the fastest-growing industries in the world.
I've spent over $1 million being in Mastermind Groups or conducting them.
Nothing in my life has moved the needle more than being in a Mastermind Group. I attended Masterminds when I was broker than broke. It got me off the ground. Over 15 years ago I conducted Mastermind Groups when I wasn't the smartest guy in the world. However, I was one chapter ahead of the people who were in the room.
For those who are interested in turning their passion into profit, how would they get started?
There are three types of people. First, there is someone with a skill or expertise. There are people in this world who are trying to figure out how you've achieved success. They are at day 1 of their journey. You can cut their learning curve by sharing your knowledge.
A great example is Dior. She grew up in Columbia and left for Europe when she was 17 years old. She had zero money but eventually got into PR and accounting. She spent 13 years at a great company. When she got pregnant, she didn't want to work a 9-to-5 anymore so she quit.
She purchased KBB and soon realized how much knowledge and value she had from 13 years of working in a firm. She knew that there were so many people starting on day 1 that knew nothing about PR. She started doing workshops with new business owners on how to learn PR and marketing. She learned the tactics and we pushed her to implement them. Today, she's on a different playing field. She sells her workshops out every time, for crazy amounts of money.
The second type of person is someone who transforms their mess into their message.
I want to share with you the story of Nathalie. She went through a divorce and her daughter was suffering because of it. When she knew that, she immediately flipped the switch and made it a child-centered divorce. She got together with her ex and they figured out how to co-parent in a healthy way. Within one year, her daughter wasn't upset anymore. Today, Nathalie does virtual workshops teaching parents how to create a child-centered divorce.
The third type of person is being the reporter of other people's expertise. This is how Tony Robbins started. Jim Rohn changed his life and then he started doing events teaching Jim Rohn's stuff. Tony taught it so much that he became the expert. His book, Money Master The Game is one of the best financial books of all time. However, Tony isn't a financial guy. He recorded all of the top financial guys, correlated the information and created a process based on them.
Any advice for those who are ready to join KBB but are held back by time and money?
Wherever you are in your life right now, I've been there. I've been broker than broke. However, I've also made $100,000 per year, $100,000 per month, $100,000 per week and eventually, $100,000 per day. Living the hard way now is easy in the future. Living the easy way now is hard in the future.
Start saying no to the things that don't move the needle in your life.
Staying in a job that doesn't serve your life is going to be hard forever. This is why I always play like I'm ten points down and go after hard now. Today, I have an amazing wife, a job that I love, and I live in my dream home. My life is easier because I went after it hard when I had no time.
If you stop doing the stuff that doesn't serve you, God or your bigger future, there is time. We all have 24 hours in a day. With regard to money, we are in a new era where knowledge is the new currency. I encourage you to learn from people who have already been where you want to go. If you're going to put money anywhere, put it into knowledge. It's exponential.
