Rob Burns' video marketing tips will help to skyrocket your online traffic.

Here is a sneak peek of my interview with him, where we talk about the power of video marketing for online businesses today.

Can you tell us a little bit about what you do?

A video, for the most part, is used by an agency or video team. Usually, they are one-off video projects. It takes a lot of time and money. We went and spoke to all of the main eCommerce folks and said, “What do you need, what isn't out there, and what do you wish you had?” We built a platform and systemized everything. Once you join our platform, there's a drop-down menu. You can pick your actor and watch a 15-second video so that you can hear them speak. By doing this, you know if it matches your communities.

You want your spokesperson to match your avatar.

You can choose your own custom backgrounds. If you don't like the ones that you have, you can send one to us and we will create it for you. Same thing with music, intros, and outros. If a customer has any extra product footage that they want us to integrate, there is a section where you can add and edit it in, at no extra charge.

A lot can be lost in a video as a result of the collaboration process.

Instead of having to communicate with multiple people at different times, whether that's with scriptwriters, editors or a customer support team, we have one place where you can talk to everybody. This is what makes our platform so unique. It ensures that nothing slips through the cracks or is missed. We set it up so that you can see when your video is ready to publish.

Why do you think that video is so important for eCommerce sellers? What kinds of results have you seen once your clients have started to use video?

Marketing and sales 101 would say that the best sale is made by shaking someone's hand. The next best thing would be to create a video. Some people are naturally visual and auditory. They don't want to read. People's attention spans are getting shorter and shorter. A video is a great way to make a quick and personal connection with somebody.

The main thing that you want to do from a marketing perspective is getting people to like and trust you. If you do it right, you can achieve that very quickly with video.

Do you mind sharing a little bit about the different ways that you can brand, communicate, and market your products via video?

The biggest mistakes that I see a lot of people make when they first do a video is that they focus too much on themselves and how awesome their product is. However, people don't really care about you. They care about themselves and finding a solution to their pain. With our product review video, its a third party person. It's almost as if someone is giving a review. This is really effective.

About 80% of viewers are mobile now.

We do a lot of social media ad type stuff, like Facebook ads. Some of our clients accidentally posted their Instagram ads on Facebook. They crushed the Facebook ad because an Instagram ad is limited to 59 seconds. It's also 1080 x 1080, meaning that it's square.

We also do retargeting ads. We have a funnel package where we will do the YouTube, Instagram, Facebook videos, and then we will have product videos. Let's say that someone goes from a Facebook ad to a product video, and then they bounce off of the product video page. We will have the exact same person and product in the retargeting ad.

We like to see people do a survey series. These are awesome because it puts clients back into a sales funnel. People are going to tell you why they didn't buy your product.

The more that you know about your client, the more that you can narrow down and figure out who your avatar is.

We are doing things like cinemagraphs. This is when you take 10 seconds of a video and you freeze everything, but leave one section animated. We are also experimenting with doing a survey funnel with video chatbox. Those are great videos for marketers that we've found them to be very effective.

Can you share a little bit about the work you do for crowdfunding campaigns?

By 2019, 80% of all internet content will be video. Crowdfunding videos are great because they are very effective at story selling. You can make connections with people. The best crowdfunding videos are with the founders of a product. You can tell a founder's story, but also put yourself in the viewer's place.

Crowdfunding is about solving someone else's problem. Those are the videos that do really well. It's all about the hero's journey.

When it comes to creating video content, could you share some tips about what someone should focus on?

The biggest mistake that people make is to talk about themselves and how awesome their product is. The sad truth is that people don't care. The second thing would be to solve a problem.

What is the pain point of the person in the video?

I always use the Star Wars analogy where the hero in the video is actually the person watching the video. That would be Luke Skywalker. When you think about it, Yoda has all the skills. He's the one that has the brain power to make things levitate and read people's minds. He's the guide.

If you can position yourself or your product as the skilled guide that's helping the hero, which is the viewer, then you are really going to see some good conversions.

Would you typically have a teleprompter or memorize the script?

Again, it depends. Our basic stuff has teleprompters. If it's a larger production then usually we are using professional actors, and that is when the script is memorized. A lot of times, for people who are shooting their own stuff, being natural and organic is key. Sometimes it can be more effective to take this route. If you are being raw and authentic, it will increase the trust factor with your audience. People are looking for real. You want your product videos to be more polished because you want people to have faith in you and your product. However, when it's just you in a video, being authentic is most important.

What other elements make for a good video?

It's about making a connection. Establish that you are similar to the community that is watching the video and then talk about people's pain points and the things that are going to make them happy.

It's either things that they want or its eliminating things that they don't want.

Lastly, if you do those things right, then the close can be quick. You can say, “Hey, if you are really interested, click here.” You would think that the back end would be much more loaded, in terms of closing someone. However, it's not. The front end is the place that matters most. It's all about creating trust.

Any general advice for someone that has a product, know's that they should do video, but they aren't doing it?

The #1 thing is to just do it, even if you fail.

How can people learn more about you guys?

If you go to videotelepathy.com/ecomm you can schedule a time to talk to somebody. Our whole sales process is about helping people. We never try to sell anything. We are all about answering questions. Even if you don't want to buy anything, schedule a time and we will be glad to help you out.

I hope these video marketing tips inspire you to start creating video content!

Like Brian said, the best thing that you can do is just start. Video marketing is the future. If you want to create engaging online marketing for your online business, a video is the best way to do it. In the words of Gary Vaynerchuk, “No matter what you do, your job is to tell your story.”
