5 Easy Steps To Get Motivated To Mastery

How do you get motivated to really master an area of your life?

I've talked about this through my blog and in my book, Life Mastery, that there are many different areas of life that constantly require focus and energy.  If you ignore an area of your life, such as your health, it begins to suffer and cause problems down the road.  The same can be said for any other area of your life.  Mastery is required for every area of your life if you want to constantly be growing and improving.

I was watching a YouTube video last night of Robert Herjavec, who is one of the co-stars on Shark Tank and Dragons Den.  One of the pieces of advice that he said is that in order to be successful you must focus on ONE THING and get REALLY GOOD at that.  He says you must become a master in that area and not worry about everything else.  If you look at a hall of fame quarterback in the NFL, they get paid to be good at one thing and one thing only:  throwing the ball.  They aren't worried about defence or any other area of the game – they're entire focus is on being the best quarterback.  This was really good advice, and I realized that I've approached this philosophy in my own life.

How Do I Get Motivated?

I get asked this question all the time, which is why I wanted to share these 5 easy steps to get motivated to mastery.  This process is an exercise and requires you to actually participate, so you will want to take out a pen and paper and go through this process.  If you just read through this blog post and don't do anything, you just WASTED YOUR TIME.  All success comes from DOING, so you'll want to make sure that you follow along and answer these questions for yourself.

Let's begin…

1) What is an area of your life that you wish to master?

It can be any area of your life or a goal that you may be in the pursuit of – health, fitness, relationships, finance, business, career, etc…

2) What will it cost you if you don't master this area of your life?

Think long and hard about this, while being SPECIFIC as possible.  The purpose of this is to create the pain and leverage on yourself to do something about it.  Don't sugar coat things – be honest.

3) How would the quality of your life improve if you master this area of your life?

Think about how amazing you'd feel and how much more rich and fulfilling your life will be.  What would the rewards be?  The purpose of this is to create the pleasure and positive emotions to empower you to follow through.

4) What's the story you tell yourself, which has been holding you back?

Everyone has a story they tell themselves or share with others of why they can't do something or follow through.  It's often just a rationalization.  It's a limiting belief that is holding them back.  What is it for you?

Once you have it, write it down and ask yourself “why is this bullshit?”

Realize that it's BS and let go of it.

“The only thing that is keeping you from getting what you want, is the story you keep telling yourself about why you can't have it.”  — Anthony Robbins

5) What are you going to do to master this area of your life?

What actions are you going to take?  What can you do RIGHT NOW to move towards your outcome?  What are you going to commit to?  Write out a quick action plan and think about how you can do something ASAP to create momentum.

How do you feel after writing this stuff down?  My guess is you're probably pumped up and ready to get going on things!

Remember, you can either settle in life… or set your own standard for success and fulfillment.

Good luck!
