If You’re Not Outside Your Comfort Zone, You Won’t Learn Anything

I’m here to tell you if you’re not outside your comfort zone, you won’t learn anything. By nature, human beings crave security and comfort. Although a comfort zone feels safe, this isn’t where the magic happens.

A study conducted back in 1908 showed that remaining in a state of comfort ensured steady performance, however, in order to increase or maximize performance levels, we need to be in a space of “optimal anxiety”. Another words, a little bit of fear is a good thing.

Brene Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston, explains that, “One of the worst things we can do is pretend that fear and uncertainty don’t exist.” Anything of value in life requires that you push your boundaries. When you get out of your comfort zone, you challenge yourself to do things that you wouldn’t normally do.

Everything that you desire in life is outside of your comfort zone and inside your learning zone. What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

I’m not suggesting that you jump head first outside of your comfort zone. Rather, take baby steps towards the fear that you are trying to overcome.

When you break through your fear, day-by-day, you become more confident, and you develop the momentum that you need in order to grow and evolve into the person that you are meant to be. I believe it’s not what you get in life that makes you happy, but rather it’s who you become.

If you are constantly afraid to take risks in life and do things that scare you, you will never truly understand who you are. As they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

To this day, I am constantly pushing myself and doing things that allow me to grow. The reality is that if you aren’t growing, you’re dying. If you want to master your life, you need to learn how to be comfortable being uncomfortable.

Yes, the feeling of being uncomfortable can be painful at first. Personal growth and transformation is never easy, or else everyone would do it. When we start to push our boundaries, there will always be a little bit of resistance. However, the reality is that comfort is the enemy.

To clarify this point, I am reminded of a quote from Arnold Schwarzenegger who said that, “The last three or four reps is what makes the muscle grow. This area of pain divides the champion from someone who is not a champion. That’s what most people lack, having the guts to go on and just say they’ll go through the pain no matter what happens.”

Any time you feel uncomfortable or nervous, celebrate those emotions. This is allowing is allowing you to grow. For example, next month I’m giving a speech in front of one thousand people.

I have to admit that the idea of it makes me uncomfortable. But that doesn’t hold me back from doing it because I have conditioned my mind to view it as an exciting opportunity, rather than a fearful one.

I don’t have to give the speech. I want to do it, because I know that discomfort is what will allow me to grow and fully embody the person that I desire to be. Become who you want to be now!

My challenge to you is to do something that you wouldn’t normally do, because if you’re not outside your comfort zone, you won’t learn anything. Brian Tracy said it best – “Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.”

Face your fears and know that you are supposed to feel a bit scared in the process. That is how you know you are making progress! Reframe fear in a positive way. When you do so, it will change how you feel.

The unknown is a magical place. This is where your dreams manifest themselves. Are you going to play it safe and keep dreaming of a better life, or are you going step outside of your comfort zone and design the life that you desire?

The choice is yours. I challenge you to take the leap!
