Getting A DEXA Scan: Body Fat & Bone Density Test

I would like to share with you my experience getting a DEXA scan, a body fat and bone density test.

I recently visited Bodycomp Imaging, located in downtown Vancouver, and met with owner, Peter Schwagly for my scan.

Peter founded his company as a way to empower people to make changes to their body composition.

At Bodycomp Imaging they offer a new way to look at your body.  Their DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan tells you how much muscle, fat, and bone your body is composed of.

They use this image to measure the fat and lean mass in each of your limbs, as well as your torso.

They also check the fat percentage of your abdomen in order to ensure that it is equal to or less than your total body fat.

The DEXA scan is the modern gold standard for body imaging.

It is one of the most highly accurate measurements of body composition available on the market today. A whole body scan has about 98.5% accuracy.

In terms of seeing results from your fitness and dietary efforts, Peter suggests that you wait between 3-6 months for re-measurement.

I have low bone density, which is why it's really important that I do a lot of exercise and eat foods rich in calcium and Vitamin D.

I like to measure and monitor my bone density levels every 3 months.  A DEXA scan is the best way to determine that what I am doing is working.

After reading James A. Levine’s book called, Get Up!: Why Your Chair is Killing You and What You Can Do About It, I was shocked to hear about the negative effects that sitting has on our health.

I work from my laptop, which means that I am sitting a lot, causing me back pain.

Research shows that lack of activity, like sitting at a computer for long periods during the day, can cause weak bones and osteoporosis (Wisse, 2016).
