Bad days suck.

I'm not going to sugar coat it. They can ruin your mood in a second, but they don't have to. When life gets messy, you can improve your state, almost instantly. Even better, there are ways that you can prevent the bad days from occurring in your life as often. I want to share with you two approaches that I take when I'm having a bad day.

Approach #1 – Change Your Day

Even though you may think you're having a bad day, sometimes it's just a bad moment. It doesn't have to dictate how the rest of your day will unfold. By cultivating the right mindset, you can recover from your bad days and transform them into great days.

These are the days that I am most proud of because I didn't give up on myself. Instead, I resolved my inner and external conflicts on my own. Below are three ways that you can change the course of your day when it feels like nothing is going right.

A) Change Your Physiology

Your state of mind is initimately connected to your physiology. When I'm not feeling good the first thing that I try to do is change my emotional state. When you're having a bad day, it's easy to spiral and have your emotions get the best of you. You can put yourself into a more positive state simply by changing your physiology.

Just getting out of your current environment and moving your body can immediately change how you feel. When you’re in control of your mind, you become the master of your emotions and you understand that life is happening for you, not to you.

B) Practice Mindfulness

I don't know about you, but when I'm stressed out, my breathing becomes more shallow. This is a recipe for anxiety and overwhelm. The next time that it feels like your emotions are getting the best of you, try closing your eyes and take a few deep diaphragmatic breaths. It will help to calm your mind and bring you back to the present moment.

If you want to take it one step further, try meditating. This is one of the most powerful mindfulness-based practices. It teaches you how to bring more attention to the moment and the breath.

A lot of people live too much in the past or too much in the future. The spiritual author and teacher, Eckhart Tolle, attributes human suffering — depression, anxiety, guilt, worry, fear, and more — to our tendency to live in our minds instead of in the present. The present is all that matters. When you spend more time in this place, you will feel more connected to yourself and, in turn, more in control of your state.

C) Ask For Help

When you're having a bad day and nothing is going right it's easy to isolate yourself and be alone with your thoughts. A lot of people don't want to be a burden to others. I get it. However, isolation is not the answer. Talking to your friends or loved ones is sometimes all you need to feel better and turn your day around.

Approach #2 – Surrender To The Day

Sometimes you will try to turn your day around, but for whatever reason, nothing works. Your mind and body won't be having it. If this happens, I suggest you surrender to the day. Don't try to change anything. Rather, just feel whatever is coming up and accept your reality. Whatever you resist, persists.

Sometimes I have days when nothing is working for me because the Universe is telling me that I need to rest and recover. The beautiful thing about life is that every day is a new opportunity to start over. Bad days are temporary. They aren't permanent. Take comfort in knowing this.

To be honest, I don't even like to give a day alike “bad.” The reason being is that labels are all a matter of interpretation. There have been many days that I perceived as being “bad” that turned out to be some of my best days.

Your rock bottom experiences can result in beautiful “aha” moments that you never would have discovered had you not experienced hardship. To give you an example, the darkest days in my life led to me starting my online business and wanting to improve every area of my life. The pain motivated me to grow and learn more about myself.

Now the question is, “How can you prevent bad days from happening altogether?”

How I start my day is how I end my day. Creating an empowering morning ritual is one of the best gifts that I've given to myself and my life. It's a preventative measure that I take to ensure that I'm at my best, every day.

Whether it's 15-30 minutes or one hour, I always engage in some activity in the morning that nurtures my mind, body, and soul. I do things like meditate, read, recite affirmations, practice gratitude, and exercise. By focusing on the good things in my life, I feel empowered and energized to master my day.

When you're starting the day at level 10, you will have a level 10 day. It's that simple. When challenges arise, you will be better able to deal with them because you made it a priority to master your mind and emotions.

If you're having a bad day, you have the power to change it.

I encourage you to try one of the approaches that I have shared with you. Not every day can be a great day. I believe that we are meant to have disempowering days so that we can appreciate the great days even more. Every day that you're here on Earth is something to cherish. Have gratitude for your life. It truly is a gift.
