Recently, in my Life Mastery Accelerator program, I received a good question from one of my members, who asked me:

“Since I am continually growing and working on bettering myself, I realize that I have less in common with people that I used to be around much more, such as my siblings, parents, and in-laws. I find that the more that I grow, the less that I can relate to them, because their mindset about money and business is so different than mine. How can I continue on my path, while also keeping good relationships with those that I care about that are in a different place than me?”

I believe that who you are speaks a lot louder than what you say. When I first got into the world of self-development, business, and internet marketing, I had to deal with unsupportive friends and family.

A lot of people made fun of me, told me that I would fail, and that I should just get a regular job. I didn’t try to force my beliefs onto them or influence their thinking.

I knew that I was on the right path, so I sought out like-minded people who had the same goals and dreams as myself. I loved my family and friends from a distance, but I knew that it wasn’t healthy to be around their negative energy every single day.

As my life began to transform, it got the attention of the same people. Sure enough, they started to respect who I was and what I had to say. They were more open to what I was doing, because they saw the results of my efforts. Results never lie.

Eventually, I got my sister and brother into Kindle publishing, and they have since gone on to experience success in the online world. They are more open to self-development because they see how it has worked to change their lives and mine for the better.

Keep in mind that this shift didn’t happen because I forced my lifestyle on them. Rather, I focused my energy on being the best that I could be, and I inspired them to do the same.

I believe that everyone is in your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. It is your job to discover who those people are, and how they are helping you become the people that you desire to be, even if they are your unsupportive friends and family.

You don’t need anyone’s approval to succeed in life. At the end of the day, all that matters is that you believe in yourself and understand that your vision is yours alone. Do not let anyone get in the way of what you want in life, not even your friends or family.

Live your life, keep focusing on your ‘why’, and the world will adjust. This is how to deal with unsupportive friends and family. In the words of Zero Dean, “Not everyone will understand your journey. That's fine. It's not their journey to make sense of. It's yours.”
