Don't Worry About Being Perfect, Just Do It.

I've come across many people that want to create a video blog, but they're too caught up in being a perfectionist.

Perfectionism is what STOPS people from taking action.

When I first started my video blog, I didn't worry about being perfect at all.  I didn't have an expensive camera, any audio equipment, or really any idea what I was doing.

I started out using my little digital camera.  I didn't have a tripod, so I mounted this camera on top of a pile of books.  Sometimes I'd even use my iPhone or webcam on my computer.

The point is… you don't need much to get started.  Just do it.

The most important thing comes down to the QUALITY of your content and how you communicate.  If you can engage people and are interesting, then people will want to watch you, regardless of the video and audio quality.

The best advice I can give you:  focus on progress, not perfection.

Over time, you will get better and better speaking in front of the camera.  You will make drastic improvements.  You'll see what people respond to, what they like and don't like, and make adjustments.

Take a look at any of my first YouTube videos on my channel and you'll see how much I've progressed.

How I Create My Video Blogs

The process that I go through to create my video blogs is fairly simple.

I first take out my camera (I use the Canon EOS Rebel T4i with the Seinnheiser EW112 wireless mic), mount it on my tripod, and first make sure that everything is set up the way that I want.

Before recording, I usually have a few topics that I can speak on.  Sometimes I just think of these topics on the spot, or I answer questions that people have sent me through my blog.  I don't do much preparation, as I prefer to just naturally let come out whatever is on my mind.  I like to be as authentic and natural as possible.

Next, I get into state doing my daily ritual.  This ensures that I'll be in a “flow state” and speak confidently and effortlessly in front of the camera.

I like to record things in one take so that I don't have to do much editing.

After I've recorded a video (sometimes I'll do multiple videos in one setting), I then transfer them onto my computer.

I use iMovie (for Mac) for my video editing, which is fast and easy.  I don't have to edit much, only add in a intro and title, trim the beginning and end, then it's good to go.  I'm then ready to upload it onto YouTube.

It's important to select a good title or headline for your video blog.  I like to either pick a title that is engaging, or something that is keyword optimized for what people are searching for.

For example, this video blog is titled “How To Create A Video Blog”.  It just so happens, this is a popular search phrase that people search for in YouTube and Google.  By titling my video blog that, I increase my chances of getting more views and subscribers by optimizing my video for that phrase.

Once uploaded, I add in a description, some links, keywords, an image with the title of the video blog, and then publish it.

I've also taken things a step further and I embed the video into a blog post, just like what I did here.  I like to write an article on the topic as well, to increase the chances of me getting traffic in Google and the other search engines.  I even turn the audio of my video into a podcast and make it available on iTunes.

Share Your Video Blogs As Much As Possible

The last step is to share your video blogs as much as possible.

Once you've published something, you need to get it out there.

Use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest… all the social media platforms you can to get your video more views.

If your content is good, people will watch it, like it and share it with their friends as well.  This is how some videos have the potential to go viral.

Over time, your subscribers on YouTube will begin to grow.  You'll start to develop a following of loyal fans.  These people will always watch your videos, like them, comment, and things will take off from there.

This has been my experience of creating video blogs and it's been a very enjoyable process.

I love recording videos and sharing my thoughts and ideas.  It's a cool feeling knowing that you're making a difference for others and people are benefitting from what you have to say.

Video has definitely been the most powerful way for me to reach and communicate with others.  Written articles and podcasts haven't come close, as videos engage people on a deeper level and build a stronger relationship.

If you're interested in creating your own video blog, then give it a try.  Hopefully these tips will help you!
