Would you call yourself a high-achiever?

I believe that a lot of people are afraid of hard work because they associate pain with the act of doing something they deem “strenuous.” The trick is changing your mindset about what hard work means. Your beliefs affect everything in your life, from what you think and feel to how you act and react to others and the world around you.

I equate hard work with excitement. It's an opportunity for me to stretch myself and learn new things to create momentum in my life. However, I didn't always think this way. It may be hard to believe, but I used to be an extremely lazy person. I had a fixed mindset, meaning I didn't believe that I could change or grow as a human being.

As a result, I was always looking for reasons as to why I couldn't become more. Not surprisingly, I self-sabotaged and became a master procrastinator. I associated hard work with pain. In effect, I wasn't motivated to do anything because I was a victim of my mind.

Why We Procrastinate And How To Stop

By nature, we are driven by the need to avoid pain and pursue pleasure. Thus, we will tend to avoid tasks that cause us emotional pain or discomfort. Procrastination isn’t about your inability to manage time, but a way of coping with challenging emotions brought about by a certain task. Doing what is easy, comfortable, and convenient is a great way to avoid pain.

What is the pain that you associate with doing the very thing that you know will benefit your life?

If you are constantly looking for the easy out, you will only be left feeling unfulfilled. Comfort is the enemy of progress. Mastering challenging things builds grit. Grit is what will motivate you to persevere, despite all odds.

If you're not being challenged, you're not growing, and if you're not growing you're dying. In effect, doing hard things makes you a stronger person.

I'm not a huge fan of putting the words, “hard” and “work” side by side. It presupposes that doing hard things is a bad thing. When you're doing something new it always feels hard at first. In the beginning, you may feel pushed by an activity. As you've probably figured out by now, anything of value requires discipline, commitment, and energy.

However, this way of being is not sustainable and usually results in burnout. The goal is to engage in an activity that you feel naturally drawn towards, otherwise known as pull motivation. This is when you link pleasure to doing something challenging.

Are you ready to adopt the mindset of high-achievers?

Successful people are willing to play offense more than defense, meaning they are focused on working insanely hard, taking risks, and going all-in to ensure the success of their future.

You were meant to do big things in this world. However, nobody is going to hand you success on a platter. You've got to work for it. It takes practice, willpower, and discipline to develop the habit of working hard. But the payoff is well worth it.

Be willing to do what is hard now to create an easy future. When you want success as badly as you want to breathe, you know you're committed.
