Who You Spend Time With Is Who You Become

Who you spend time with is who you become. If you want to master your life, it is important that you surround yourself with people who inspire you to achieve greatness. Take a good look at the people who you spend time with on a daily basis.

The values that you live by need to be in alignment with the people you spend time with. Are you friends holding you back? If so, it’s time to find new friends. If your friends are lazy, unhappy, and negative, you will in turn, adopt those patterns of behaviour.

However, if you spend time with people that are motivated, hard working, happy, successful, and healthy, then you will be forced to elevate your game and attract those same things into your life.

In the words of Rachel Wolchin, “Surround yourself with people that reflect who you want to be and how you want to feel. Energies are contagious.” Choose your company wisely.

The person that I am today is very different from the person I used to be. During my high school years, all I cared about was video games and TV, and so I surrounded myself with people who shared the same interests. As a result, I lacked core social skills that were necessary for my development.

I soon realized that my friends were holding me back from success in life. I knew that if I didn’t grow and evolve, I would get left behind, and so I made the choice to immerse myself in the world of self-development. Since that day, I've never looked back.

Who you spend time with is who you become. For a lot of people, it is easier to surround themselves with people that never ask questions or challenge their ideas, but that’s not where the real growth lies. Comfort is the enemy.

Put yourself in environments where you can maximize your growth. Learning is the best tool for success. Like Jim Rohn says, “Don’t join an easy crowd; join one that will make you grow and that will challenge you.” Unfortunately, a lot of people hesitate from putting themselves in environments like these, for fear that they will appear stupid.

In doing so, they limit their opportunities for growth. When I was first starting out, I made it a priority to surround myself with people that were more successful than myself. How? I joined mastermind groups and attended events in order to inspire and motivate myself to level up my business and life.

Whenever I go to these events, I’m the quietest person in the room, but my brain is a sponge. I soak up as much knowledge as I can. Research shows that putting yourself in new and unfamiliar situations triggers a unique part of the brain that releases dopamine, nature’s ‘make-you-happy' chemical (Patel, 2016).

The kicker is that your brain is ONLY activated when you experience new things. If you want to experience happiness and success in life, start committing to getting uncomfortable.

Who you spend time with is who you become. It is only when you surround yourself with people that are more successful than you, that you feel the most inspired to be the best version of yourself. Success breeds success. Hans Hansen said it best – “People inspire you, or they drain you. Pick them wisely.”
