MOTIVATION: Are Your Emotions Driving You Or Destroying You?

Are your emotions driving you or destroying you?  Emotions can be negative or positive, depending on how we choose to perceive them.

It is very easy to fall victim to negative thinking, but the choice is yours.

It is important to realize that your emotions impact the way that you think and behave.  Understanding how to control your emotions is key to success.   An inability to regulate emotions is, according to Gross and Hooria Jazaieri (2014), at the root of psychological disorders, such as depression.

When you fail at something, it is natural to feel frustrated and defeated, but you should not let it consume you to the point that you feel sorry for yourself, blame others, and fail to take responsibility for your actions.

Turcois Ominek once said, “No matter the situation, never let your emotions overpower your intelligence”.  It is important to use your emotions as fuel, in order to motivate you to take massive action towards achieving your goals.

Video transcript

All right, guys. I'm going to talk to you a little bit today about emotions: anger, frustration, failure. I got a great question today from someone on SnapChat. They asked me, “How do you deal with anger and frustration when you fail?”

When you come up short, when you've been pursuing a goal, a dream, a result that you're after and it didn't work out quite the way you wanted it to – and you failed. I believe that these emotions are some of the most powerful emotions that we can experience.

They can either be a negative – if we perceive them that way – or a positive if you learn how to utilize and channel them in the right direction. They could either be a friend or a foe.

They can either drive you or destroy you

It's up to you and how you utilize and channel these emotions. You know, when you pursue a goal in life and you fail, it's a natural reaction to feel frustrated. It's a natural reaction to feel angry in some way, and you should be, at least a little bit.

You should be pissed off that you didn't achieve what you're after, but you shouldn't over-indulge in it. You shouldn't let that anger and frustration consume you to the point where you get depressed, you feel sorry for yourself, and you're blaming everyone else and not taking responsibility for the result that you got.

You shouldn't let it get to the point where you create a story and you give up. That's not what I'm saying.  You want to use these emotions to light a fire under your ass to get you back into taking massive action and channel that energy to motivate you to where you want to go. These emotions can become your friend if you perceive them that way, and if you utilize them to drive you even further.

Conclusion

Like I said guys, anger, and frustration, fear – these emotions can destroy you in your life and lead you down a path of depression and feeling sorry for yourself, or you can utilize them, and decide: “You know what, I'm not happy with the result that I got. I'm frustrated, but now I'm going to do whatever it takes.  I'm going to commit myself even further. I'm going to learn from this. I'm going to use this to help make myself better so that I can achieve the result that I'm after.”

If you utilize these emotions in that way, then it's going to create fuel for the fire and it's going to help propel you toward where you want to go. Thanks for watching.
