What would it feel like if you were moving forward in life?

For many people, making choices in life that propel them forward can be difficult. Why? Because change is a hard concept to grasp. Sometimes it can feel way better to relax in a comfort zone than it can to dive into the unknown and swim in waters that you aren't familiar with.

However, nothing ever grows in your comfort zone, so the only way of moving forward in life is to get out of your head and embrace your fears. Indecision is an overwhelming place to be. Why torture yourself? When we are faced with many decisions it can be easy to feel paralyzed by fear, but the wrong decision is better than no decision at all.

David Wethey, the author of the book, Decide – Better Ways of Making Better Decisions, suggests that “Winning or losing in both business and life often depends on making a decision – and making the right one is obviously preferable, but it is usually better to make a decision and live with it, than delay indefinitely. After all, we learn through taking risks and can’t expect to be right all the time.”

Sometimes life gives us a wake-up call, with the purpose of lighting a fire under our ass so that we will take action. The harsh reality is that the only thing holding any of us back from moving forward in life is ourselves. Are you ready to change old habits that are not serving your highest self?

Let's explore 8 behaviors that are holding you back from moving forward in life.

1. Expecting Things To Come Easy

Goals don't exist to be easy. Anything of value requires hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and discipline. If you are waiting for success to magically show up, think again. How can you possibly know what your limits are if you never take the chance to test them?

Don't do what is easy. Rather, stretch yourself and do what maximizes your potential as a human being. The hardest things in life are the most rewarding. When it comes to down to it that's where the magic lies.

In the words of Maria Bartiromo, “Don’t ever, ever, believe anyone who tells you that you can just get by, by doing the easiest thing possible. Because there’s always somebody behind you who really wants to do what you’re doing. And they’re going to work harder than you if you’re not working hard.”

2. Living In The Past

If you live based on “would's, could's, and should's”, you won't be moving forward in life. Regret is an ugly beast. You can't go back and change the past, so why bother continuing to live there?

If you live in the past, you will fail to see all of the amazing opportunities that are presenting themselves to you. If you dwell on “what was” you will never be able to envision “what could be.” Oftentimes we are our own worst enemies. When we make mistakes, sometimes we carry them with us and end up staying chained to them.

We shame ourselves when really, we should be rewarding ourselves. Why? Because mistakes prove that we are trying. Messing up in life is all part of the learning process. When you embrace your setbacks in life, you will have a greater appreciation for your bounce-backs.

Drop the past and keep moving forward. If you do, you will be better prepared to take advantage of opportunities when they arise.

3. Waiting For The Perfect Moment

In a constantly changing world, you can't rely on the perfect moment. If opportunities present themselves, you need to take advantage of them, or else they will pass you by.

How many of you have put something on hold because it didn't feel like “the right time?” This could be starting an online business, finding a romantic partner, or taking that vacation that you've been dreaming of.

In our never-ending cycle of desire to reach the perfect moment, we get trapped in a bubble of indecision, leaving us feeling defeated and overwhelmed. In this place, we can't take any action. When it comes to your goals and dreams, there is no perfect time to achieve them. Stop waiting for the perfect moment and take control of your life right now!

The greatest success stories didn't start with the perfect moment. Rather, they started because someone seized an average moment and transformed it into an epic outcome; with hard work, grit, and an unwavering belief in themselves. Be present, in the here and now. Moving forward in life requires that you take today and make it perfect because tomorrow provides no guarantees.

4. Doubting Your Awesomeness

Whatever your goal or dream is in life, if you don't believe that you are worthy of achieving it, you won't. It's as simple as that. The reason why so many people never end up fulfilling their potential in life is that they lack confidence in themselves. Self-belief is the foundation of success.

It is true that our beliefs shape our actions in life, but new research into neural plasticity reveals that we can literally rewire our brains in ways that affect our thoughts and behavior at any age. If you've struggled with confidence in the past, now is the time to build it back up!

Don't let conditioned beliefs and false judgments dim your light and tell you that you aren't good enough. If you want to step into your power, commit to moving forward with confidence. If you find it difficult at first, try acting as if you already possess the confidence you aspire to have.

5. Surrounding Yourself With Energy Vampires

If you surround yourself with energy vampires, moving forward in life is not an option. Why? Because you become who you spend time with. Negativity can feel contagious; once you get hit with it, you can't shake it, which is why you need do your best to stay far away from these types of people.

Energy vampires feed off of other people's energy in order to feel fulfilled. They are skilled at emotionally exhausting you, feeding your doubts and validating your fears. Life is to short to waste your time with toxic people.

Know your boundaries. Once you start removing negative people from your life, you start to rediscover what is possible. Only surround yourself with high-vibe people who inspire and motivate you to achieve more.

6. Playing The Victim

If you don't take responsibility for your life, and instead choose to play the victim, moving forward in life is not an option. The victim mentality serves no one. In this headspace, people blame the world and others for their problems and feel sorry for themselves.

Research studying the psychology of victimhood suggests that individuals with a victim mentality have difficulty expressing and processing negative emotions; such as anger, fear, and disappointment; as well as difficulty with taking responsibility for their desires and actions.

Changing your story is the first step to taking responsibility for your choices in life. This starts with tapping into the underlying source of your victimhood. When you do the work to figure out where your learned helplessness first manifested itself, you will feel empowered to make a change. When you shift your mentality from that of victim to victor, you become the leader of your life.

7. Staying In Your Comfort Zone

A lot of people like to stay in their comfort zone. Why not? It's a stable, safe place to hang out. A comfort zone is a beautiful and safe place, but nothing ever grows there.

By nature, humans consider a change of any kind to be negative. It predictability feels good. However, if you stay in a place where nothing changes, you won't change either, which is why moving forward in life requires that you step outside of your comfort zone.

When you find your zone of discomfort, your confidence expands and a world of possibilities start to open up for you. If you are someone that struggles with the unknown make small changes at first, until you are able to step further outside of your comfort zone.

8. Refusing To Commit To Personal Growth

It doesn't matter what industry you are in. The fact of the matter is that if you aren't growing, you're dying. Life moves so fast. If you aren't moving with it, you are going to get left behind. This is why I am addicted to learning, growing and mastering new things, so much so that I have built an entire brand around it. If moving forward in life is at the top of your list, then you need to commit to personal growth and development.

Keep in mind that personal growth isn't something that happens overnight. Rather, it's a process. In reality, we never stop growing. There is no endpoint. The moment we appreciate the fact that the journey towards actualizing our potential is just as important as the destination itself is the moment at which our personal growth becomes a rewarding experience.

Learn how to embrace a love for learning. A growth mindset is what helps you achieve your goals and create a life filled with opportunities. In the words of Eric Butterworth, “Don't go through life; grow through life.”

If you aren't moving forward, you are moving backward.

Moving forward is a choice. Make decisions that will propel you forward, no matter how many obstacles life throws at you. If you take the time to consciously start shifting these behaviors and adopting new habits that serve your higher self, you will transform your life.

We all get stuck in a rut from time to time, but it's up to you whether or not you want to stew in it or take action to rise above it. Which choice will you make? Commit to mastery.
