The Mastery Mentality

Once you adopt the mastery mentality, everything in your life changes for the better.  I am so passionate about mastery. So much so, that I built my business and my brand around the concept.

Your mind is a powerful tool. I believe that it is the foundation for everything that happens in your life.  However, it is up to you how you choose to use it. It can either enhance or destroy your life.  I would like to share with you the three levels that comprise the mastery mentality.

Knowing

The first level is knowing. The three most dangerous words in the human language are ‘I know that.’  This mentality is what prevents people from advancing in life.  We have been conditioned in society to believe that success depends on how much a person knows.  However, if you look at some of the most successful people in the world, they aren’t academics or professors.

Rather, they are people who dropped out of school to take a risk, pursue a dream, and forge their own path to success.  How is it that college dropouts like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg have become master achievers?  It’s because they continuously learn new things, they are committed to what they do, and they step out of their comfort zone and take massive action on a daily basis.

It begs the question, “If you want to be an entrepreneur, should you go to college to be successful?” A lot of people have a world of knowledge, but they don’t know how to apply it in the real world.  You can know what to do, but not do what you know.  Knowing is power, but it is not enough. Without action, knowledge is useless.

Doing

The second level is doing. This involves applying what you have learned.  Attending seminars and events is great, but if you never integrate the knowledge and take action, then you won’t be successful.

At the click of a mouse there is a world of information available for consumption.  Unfortunately, this so-called ‘luxury' has caused people to live habitually in a state of ‘information overload’.  In the words of Mitchell Kapor, “Getting information off the Internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant.”

People who are addicted to information end up dabbling on a lot of different projects, but never stick with one thing because they have a difficult time focusing.  In the words of Bruce Lee, “Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”

Living

The third level of mastery is living. Living is when you are not only applying what you know, but you are doing something consistently, AND receiving results from it.

In the words of Marie Forleo, “Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally, it comes from what you do consistently.”  How do you develop the mastery mentality? Repeat it. Repetition is the mother of mastery.

In order to obtain mastery of a particular skill, it is said that you need to spend around 10,000 hours practicing it.  If you want something bad enough, practice and live it, every day of your life.  Don’t get caught up in knowing and doing.

Mastery is the only path to success.  Adopt the mastery mentality and watch your life change for the better.
