ABOUT BLOGGING, YOUTUBE & PODCASTING

Difficulty Level:
Newbie Friendly

Blogging, YouTube, and podcasting is relatively easy and simple to get started with.  It doesn't require any previous online marketing or business experience.

Startup Costs: $20+

You can start blogging, publishing YouTube videos, and podcasting for as low as $20.  The primary expense to get started is buying a domain name and a hosting plan.  Once you have that, then WordPress is free.  Publishing videos to YouTube is free.  Podcasting requires hosting as well, but publishing to iTunes is free.

Avg. Timeframe: 6 months

Many bloggers, YouTubers, and podcasters don't make any money at all.  That could be because most don't approach it as a business.  However, it's important to understand that making money through blogging, YouTube and podcasting requires a lot of patience and time.  If you're a newbie, it can take 6 months of consistent publishing before you can expect to earn money.

Potential: $1,000,000+/year

The potential of blogging, YouTube, and podcasting is a seven-figure income, over $1,000,000+ per year.  The money you earn will be based on the market you're in, your traffic, subscribers, as well as the monetization methods that you utilize.

Passive: No

Blogging, YouTubing, and podcasting is not a reliable passive income stream over the long term.  It requires you consistently publishing content and engaging with your subscribers in order to stay relevant to them.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

These are some of the most frequently asked questions that I get about blogging, YouTube, and podcasting.

Q: What if I'm not an expert or someone important?

A: That's okay.  You don't need to be an “expert” to share your ideas or message with the world.  The internet has provided an opportunity for ANYONE, anywhere in the world, to freely share their thoughts, opinions, wisdom, experiences, and message through blogging, YouTube, and podcasting.

Over time, you can become a known “expert” or “authority” in your market, but you don't need to start out that way.  I still see myself as someone that just passionately shares with the world everything that has benefitted me in my life, not seeing myself to be an expert or “guru.”

Q: What if I'm not a great writer, or great in front of the camera or podcast?

A: Nobody starts out as a great writer or with charisma in front of a camera.  It is learned, practiced, and developed over time.  The more you do anything, the better you get at it, and then you eventually become proficient.

Q: Do I need a high-quality camera or mic to do YouTube or podcasting?

A: No.  You can start with whatever you have.  If you have a webcam on your computer, a smartphone with a camera, or a digital camera, that will suffice for YouTube.  For a mic, you can start with the mic on your computer, webcam, or even attached to headphones.

As time goes on, you'll want to upgrade your equipment.  However, it's not required to get started.  The most important thing is the content, message, and your passion behind what you're sharing.

Q: How do I get a domain name and set up hosting for my blog?

A: A domain name can be purchased inexpensively at GoDaddy, which is what I use for my domains.  For hosting, I recommend Bluehost (you get a free domain if you use them), as they're reliable, easy to use, have good customer support, and cost less than $10/month.

I also recommend watching this video tutorial I did on how to create a blog and set it up in minutes.

Q: How do I decide what to create content about?

A: You can create content on whatever you choose – whatever you're most passionate about.  However, you can often have greater success by identifying a specific niche you want to create content on, then research all of the most popular topics that people are searching for and create content on that.

Once you get an audience and subscribers, you can then learn what they want and are more interested in, then create content to continue to add value to them.

Q: What is the best way for me to get started with blogging/YouTube/podcasting?

A: The best way to get started is to come up with the name of your brand (or you can use your personal name) and then watch this free tutorial on how to create a blog and set it up in minutes.  You can easily set up your domain name and hosting today.
