Amazon FBA in Europe is the future of e-commerce.
Amazon has made selling globally simple and easy. However, that doesn't mean that there’s still not a lot involved in running an Amazon business. The best way to accelerate your success is by taking a course that can guide you through the process. I've been through the Marketplace SuperHeroes training and I highly recommend it.
It's user-friendly and super easy to follow. What's equally impressive about the course content is that it's geared towards an international audience. This is in sharp contrast to a lot of Amazon courses out there that are only focused on selling in the U.S.
The training is personally delivered by Stephen and Robert who have both achieved massive success on Amazon. They've got years of experience under their belt, so why not learn from the best?
Here is a sneak peek of our interview, where we talk about how to sell on Amazon FBA in Europe. Let's dive in!
Could you both share a little bit about your story and how you got started selling on Amazon?
My (Robert) background comes from wholesaling in Ireland. My father was in it and I just committed to the family business by default. It was always going to be that way. In the late 1990's-early 2000's, I could definitely see that Amazon was going to become a big opportunity. We had a good range of products that we were able to sell. At that particular time, we were primarily selling products in the United Kingdom. A lot of our product lines were domestic. They were sourced in the UK by UK companies.
We weren't even selling outside of Europe.
Very quickly I realized that importing was definitely the way to move forward. We could reduce our pricing while controlling the market and our product. This really spurred me on to say, “Well, given that we are already importing a product that we know, does that disqualify us from importing a product that we don't know?” Our answer was, “Absolutely not.”
We started researching other products that we could bring in, using the same process and sales channels. That's really when our “aha” moment happened. This is when our sales and the turnover of our business started to take off. From there, we focused primarily online.
As Rob said, I (Stephen) came along during a time when I was trying to figure out what to do with my life. I was stuck in a job as a data processor where I would type out forms on a computer all day long. In my early 20's, I knew that I had to start figuring out what I wanted to do.
I studied in college for a while but never finished. There were two directions that I was going to take in life – being a musician or an entrepreneur. When my dream of being in the music industry wasn't working out, I started googling around about how to become an entrepreneur. I found cheap products online and tried to sell stuff, but I was getting nowhere fast.
My whole journey started when I began to take control of my life.
I started reading personal development books and focusing on what I could do. It was time to take responsibility for my life. I wanted to find a successful entrepreneur so that I could learn from them. This led me to the question, “What business can I start that doesn't require me to be an expert, that I don't have to build a huge following around, while still selling something that I believe in?” I arrived at physical products.
Rob was introduced to me through a family friend. He showed me his operation. I was really excited. For the first time in my life, I saw real products, real people, and real sales. I started to believe that this was something that I could do. With Rob's help, I knew I could succeed. I quit my job and worked with Rob full-time for 9 months learning how the business worked.
Together, we utilized Amazon FBA across the world to build a business that sold a range of products. As Rob alluded, when I came along, we had to reinvent the business. We had to get rid of the old products that were becoming saturated and declining in popularity.
Together, we created this process where we could sell a product on any niche on Amazon.
All that we were doing was finding simple gaps in the market. We would take those products, brand them, import them, and sold them globally. We've helped over 3,000 people thus far. We believe in this business so strongly.
Do you guys primarily sell on Amazon or do you sell on other channels as well?
We have focused on the Amazon side of things simply because of passivity. With Amazon, we don't have to set up a site or concern ourselves with credit card transactions, shipping items, outside traffic, or customer service. We call it the marketplace model, whereby we go into a marketplace, like Amazon, find product opportunities, and launch those products across multiple Amazon marketplaces.
We are really focusing on that. Many of our members and ourselves have utilized channels, like eBay, but right now the only marketplace we are talking about is Amazon. A lot of people talk about building outside traffic. However, we define that as the grand business model whereby you start with a brand and focus on that solely.
In this case, Amazon is one sales channel within that brand ecosystem. We've found that our clients don't have the knowledge or skill-base to be able to successfully launch a brand from day one.
The Amazon marketplace business model is the best place to start.
It's just a matter of mastering the product research process and launching products in multiple markets. A lot of people eventually gravitate to moving to the brand business model. When you do things the right way and you are selling multiple products, there is no reason why you can't build a phenomenal full-time income solely on Amazon.
If you want to start taking your best products and building that brand around them, you can. It just depends on where you are in your business and in your life. You just need to be aware of the different business models that exist.
What should people be aware of if they want to sell in the different European marketplaces?
The U.S. is the biggest player in the pot. However, whenever you start to put Europe together, you notice how big it really is. The population of the United Kingdom is around 70 million, Germany is over 80 million, France is 60 million, Spain is 40 million, and Italy is 70 million.
All of the sudden, you've got more of a population in Europe than you do in the United States. In fact, there are other satellite countries inside Europe that are now starting to be added. There is a lot more growth available in the European market than there currently is in the .com market.
Amazon is already talking about the possibility of Holland and Netherlands having their own platform. They've developed marketplaces in Poland and the Czech Republic, and there are more countries that are being added all the time. This is why there is massive potential inside the European marketplace.
In Europe, there is something called EFN, which stands for European Fulfillment Network.
This network allows you to ship all the products that you sell on Amazon to one place, making it super simple. Amazon allows you to use one stock source. For example, if you make a sale on Amazon FR, that product will ship from the UK directly to a customer in France. You don't have to do anything else.
This is when people ask us, “Where do we start in Europe?” You can sell on all of the European marketplaces because of the EFN network. When you send everything to one country, you are simplifying any issues that may be associated with starting a new business. I (Robert) know a lot of people struggle with the topic of dealing with different currencies in the European marketplace. It's quite easy.
You've got pound sterling in the UK and you've got euro everywhere else. That's straightforward. Dealing with translations is also very simple. You don't have to reshoot your photography. All you've got to do is translate the titles, bullets and some of the keywords.
Don't allow anything like that to put you off starting an Amazon business. In terms of having a UK entity, it comes down to three letters that a lot of people get frightened of, which are VAT. Whenever you are bringing your products into the European marketplace, it is much better to select one. We always recommend the UK, simply because it's the English language.
They have a very simplistic importation system and structure.
It's easy to get your goods into the country. You primarily use 1 or 2 fulfillment centers, if you have oversized units. Whenever you come into Europe as a non-European entity, VAT becomes a real pain in the butt, fast. You have to register and pay out immediately.
Also, because you are a non-European entity, you don't have what is called a “distance selling threshold.” Effectively, this restricts you from being able to sell in only one country. By doing a simple UK entity company, you remove all these barriers and restrictions. It allows you to start selling straight away in the “big five” European countries (France, Germany, Spain, Italy, UK).
If you want to be doing business in Europe, you need to have a European entity.
This will allow you to be able to perform all of the taxation scenarios that you may come up against. Having a UK entity company is so much easier to deal with, rather than having a foreign entity where you are selling in a foreign land. It's a simple system to set up and we have people who can you help you with that process. If you want a serious business, you better get serious about business.
Can anyone set up a UK entity company? Do they have to go to the UK to set the process in motion?
From day one, you want to protect yourself and your company. In doing so, you are ensuring that you will do business the right way in Europe. You used to have to come to the UK to set everything up. Thankfully, things are changing.
You can live anywhere in the world and set up a UK limited company. However, to sell on Amazon in Europe, you do have to be a resident in a European country. There is a massive list which we can provide you with. The banking used to be a big problem. However, with the network partner that we have, they can set up your banking options inside Europe for you, without you ever having to travel here. That saves about $4,000 straight away that you can invest in products to add to your catalog.
This process can be done with a couple of notarized documents to fill out.
This process doesn't have to be overwhelming. All that it requires is some simple knowledge and guidance. We know the process that works and the simplest way of doing things. All you've got to do is follow our path and you will get results.
Our good friend, Tony Robbins would say, “Success leaves clues.” It's the same thing in this situation. This is a real business. I don't care if you are a beginner or more advanced, this is absolutely doable for you. However, what will get you success faster is having the right strategy in place and the right people that have done it before.
If you don't have these things in place, you will get overwhelmed. Robert and I still have coaches and mentors whom we are learning from. The problem with shortcuts is that they just take too long. That's the reality of any business.
Once you find a profitable niche, how can you differentiate yourself from other products?
When it comes to the issue of competition and saturation, I (Robert) would flip it around and say, “Okay, it is more difficult to sell fifty units of one item per day, or it is more difficult to sell five units of ten products in one day?” They are exactly the same in terms of sales. However, having to find a market that does fifty units per day is a saturated market.
Those markets have always been saturated and competitive and they will continue to be. People have been told to get their product and pump it out in order to get fifty sales. It's so much easier to sell five units per day.
The people that are in the other marketplaces are not interested in these items.
They don't want to sell five items per day because they don't have the mental capacity to work out that you can engage in market multiplication. I know that if I had ten products that sold five units, I would feel safer and sleep a lot better at night. If you don't take this route, you will always be wondering if tomorrow will be the day when someone comes in, finds your niche, and starts competing against you.
In terms of differentiating, you want to see what is working in the marketplace. This requires that you dive into what we call, the gap process. We are looking for what people are complaining about, whether that's in terms of packaging or materials used.
At this point, we start looking for a supplier that is selling a product that has already solved the problems that people are having.
This process requires going through competitor product reviews and looking at what is and isn't working for them. By doing this, we can create better offers. A lot of the time people focus on creating crazy listings because there is an assumption that competitive items are perceived as attractive and exciting. People think that this is the only way to succeed.
However, simple products sell really well because people need them. With simple products, you don't have to worry too much about differentiation. If you have a good listing, great product pictures, and a great offer, you will be good to go with some simple optimization.
It's as difficult as you make it.
If you want to build a big brand that sells globally, you can do it. However, just know what business model you are going choose. When you are first starting in business, I always recommend the marketplace business model.
What are the biggest reasons why people fail when trying to build an Amazon business?
I (Robert) think that the biggest percentage of people that fail in business are the people that don't do anything. They sit on the fence and take zero action. It's a bit like the game of baseball. If you don't swing your bat, that pitcher is going to take you out every single time.
In my eyes, that's how 80-85% of people operate. They think it's too difficult, so they only look at the potential of things, but never do anything with it. For the people that actually dive into the process, some of them tend to sabotage themselves. They don't take the time or listen to what they are being told is the way forward.
The biggest error that I (Stephen) see people make is coming into this business undercapitalized.
They try to start with as little money as possible. When you are investing in an asset, you need capital in order to be able to grow it. You can start with $1,000 if that's all you have. However, eventually, you've got to invest more if you want to scale your business.
Secondly, a lot of people don't understand how business works. Success will not happen overnight. We all know this. You need to be prepared to invest the time, energy, and commitment to learning how to do things the right way. You've got to be in an environment where people are doing the same thing as you. In other words, surround yourself with people that are going places in life. If you are truly serious about being an entrepreneur, you need to have a strong WHY.
Always move beyond your fears and step into the business process with a long-term perspective. It may mean that you need to create a side hustle in order to raise more money to grow your business. You want to build something that is going to multiply.
How much time can someone expect to invest in your training before they start making money?
I (Robert) always tell people to allow for 6-10 hours per week. That's whether you are starting, intermediate or advanced. Keep it so that everything is passive and outsource as much as you possibly can. Take those action blocks where you watch a video, do some product research, and work on your business.
That's all that I would recommend.
Once you start to go outside that boundary, you start to tinker with things and become obsessive. This business is designed for one thing – numbers. Every single thing is a number, whether that is a price, weight, profit, or size of an item.
What can people expect to learn if they register for your upcoming webinar?
In our web class, we add a lot of value. We want to help you understand how to build an income with Amazon, which is why we break down the business model in very simple terms. As we dive deeper into the webinar, we will explore how you find products to launch on Amazon.
That is the big thing that everyone struggles with when they first start. Once we get beyond that point, the second piece is determining what makes a good product. We break down how to raise capital for your business, which is always a big question that people have.
Lastly, we talk about how you can level up your business to the point where your business is making $50,000-$100,000 per month in revenue, and you are bringing home anywhere from $15,000-$30,000 in net profit. We've got a huge support team and are always available. If you join Marketplace SuperHeroes, you will see that both Robert and I are extremely active in the group.
