A beginner Amazon seller made $20K in 30 days.
I had the opportunity to sit down with Chris and pick his brain about how he was able to build his Amazon dream business and transform his life. Let's dive in!
Do you mind sharing with people how you came across ASM and got started selling on Amazon?
I've always loved business. I'm an entrepreneur at heart. I've always had small businesses. Although I experienced success with those businesses, I wanted to find more opportunities. I looked into starting an e-commerce business because I had the desire to make money while I slept.
I've been following ASM and learning about it for the last 4-5 years. Last year the opportunity came up to sign up through ASMX, so I did that in October of last year. I'm a bit analytical. If there's an approved model that works with someone that I trust, then I'm all in. That was the proof that I needed. I made the commitment to myself to go all in. So far it's been great.
How did you find your first product?
It takes a while. I didn't know what product I wanted to sell so I was a bit hesitant. ASM has the criteria to find products that work. I followed their model and searched categories that I was passionate about. As I got into it, I started to find products that fit the criteria and that I could really get behind. As I dug further, I found products that I could build a brand around. Hence, I looked at 5-6 products and found 3-4 great opportunities.
From there, I sent my top 3 products to you and received your feedback.
The product that I ended up choosing has been working really well. The product research piece does take time, but you have to go with what you feel. The ASM model isn't just about launching a product and crossing your fingers. Rather, it's thinking bigger and building a brand. You want to go beyond Amazon.
Did your first product sell right away?
Yes, it did. I was selling 5-10 units per day without any reviews. That was a bit of a surprise. I attribute that success to the fact that I followed ASM's model. In particular, I have a great listing, in large part because I hired a professional photographer.
I was lucky to have amazing feedback from you as part of your bonus package. Because I was in a competitive category I knew that I needed to stand out. That's what I focused on. There was only one other competitor who had the same product as I did.
They did very well, selling $2,000 units in their 3rd month. However, I needed to be aware that there was another competitor coming. If something works, more people will do it. Hence, I was really proactive and did my best to stay ahead of the curve. So far I'm selling 18-20 units per day, and have expanded into the Canadian market now as well.
Do you mind sharing what your thought process was with regards to selling on Amazon.com first and why you decided to transition to Amazon.ca?
ASM recommends that you start selling on Amazon.com first. Americans are very well versed in online shopping, more than Canadians are, per se. On top of that, the market is bigger. As a Canadian, you would think that it would be more challenging selling in the U.S., but it's not.
All you need is an EIN number that you apply for in the U.S. with the IRS.
It takes 10 minutes and it can be done over the phone. You need this for customs. The biggest thing that is helpful to Canadians is hiring a freight forwarder because they handle everything for you. There are good ones and bad ones, but ASM recommends some. They make the process really easy. With regards to selling in Canada, ASM typically says that whatever you sell in the U.S., you will sell 10% of that in Canada.
Since I'm a Canadian I felt like I would have more traction and be able to have a bigger impact, even though the market is smaller. On Jungle Scout my product came up as low demand and low competition. I thought, “How can I create demand for this product?” With social media, I found ways to do that. I hustled and created awareness around my product.
Since launching my products in Canada, almost half of my sales are coming from there. My thought process is that the Canadian market gets ignored. Canadians aren't as well versed shopping online but they will get there, so why not stay ahead of the curve and launch there now so that I can build a reputation. So far it's working.
I know that you’ve started selling on your e-commerce site. What has been working for you?
Building a brand is very important. If anyone goes to your Amazon listing and sees your brand name, they will do research and learn more. That's why I wanted to build a website. Eventually, I decided to hire a smaller branding company to help me with that. I could have done it on my own but having a full-time job while selling on Amazon wasn't realistic.
I've also outsourced my social media ads.
I have an expert that does PPC on Facebook and Instagram and it works. There are days when I see huge spikes in sales. Building your social media is what builds credibility for your brand. It's what separates you from everyone else.
Any tips on how to build an Amazon business while still working full-time?
I think that the most important piece of advice is to make sure that your family is on board with your business. Share how the business can benefit everybody and the opportunities that it can provide. I'm active with my little guy. I coach hockey and I'm very involved in his life, but when he goes to bed at 8 pm, that's when I start work again.
There's are a lot of other things that I could be doing at night, but my hard work is paying off.
My wife has a business as well, so we work together. My suppliers are in China and are 13 hours ahead, so at 8 pm, EST it's 9 am the next day in China. It's a good time to get stuff done. When I first started doing product research I definitely had some late nights and made sacrifices, but it was short-term. I've starting to dial back my work hours now that the hard work is done.
Any advice for someone who has the desire to change their life and get started selling on Amazon?
Building an Amazon business is a commitment. If you aren't fully committed to the process, you will find an excuse to stop. I saw the long-term potential of what an Amazon business can provide, but I also said, “What's the worst-case scenario if this doesn't work?” Worst case, you sell all your inventory and that's that.
ASM offers you a money-back guarantee. If you don't sell any units, they give you a huge safety net, which takes some fear away. They provide so much value to people. There's a great support system in the program as well. The biggest thing is the mindset. It's not a get-rich-quick scheme. If you want to build a long-term business that can completely change your life, this is it.
This is how Chris made $20K in his first month selling on Amazon.
Chris Schreiber achieved success in a very short period of time. However, it's important to note that his journey wasn't void of challenges. What is most important is that he didn't give up. He put in the hard work and the results paid off. Today, he's built a successful Amazon business and living his dream life.
