In today's digital world, there is so much knowledge to consume. If you are looking for the answer to success, all you need to do is go online.
Learning is great, but a lot of people end up living their lives in pursuit of other people's definitions of success. It's time to start creating a version of success that is yours and yours alone.

What does success really mean to you?
If you have never taken the time to think about, now is the time to do so. In order to create your dream lifestyle, you need to know what is truly important to you.
Success is something that we all strive for in life. I know my definition of success, but that does not necessarily mean that you hold the same one. Life isn't a competition to see whose version is better. The meaning of success is unique to each of us. Do you associate success with money, power, recognition, stability, or happiness? The list goes on and on.
Your childhood experiences influence your perception of success as an adult. A lot of people assume that, in order to be deemed a “successful” person, they have to do something “extra special.” As a result, they live their lives based on widely accepted definitions of success.
Unfortunately, this decision comes with a cost. People end up sacrificing what is important to them and putting their dreams on the backburner. In my eyes, that is like playing Russian roulette with your life.
Is this a gamble that you are willing to take?
If you are having trouble defining success on your terms, the first step is to become aware of the areas of your life where you are living out of alignment. By doing so, you will become empowered to remove the roadblocks that are standing in your way of success. This will give you the freedom to pave the way for more joy and happiness into your life.
In their book, The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham, Esther and Jerry Hicks suggest that “The achievement of anything that you desire must be considered success… but, if you will let your standard of success be your achievement of joy, everything else will fall easily into place.”
Think of life's roadblocks as opportunities to come back to your authentic self and to discover sides of yourself that you never knew existed. If you need support along the way, here are 5 ways for how to define success on your terms.
1. Decide What Is Important To You
It sounds like an easy thing to figure out, but that's not always the case. Have you ever stopped to really think about what is important to you? Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in our to-do lists, household chores and priorities that consume our daily schedule. As a result, you may have forgotten about the big things that really matter in life, like happiness and health.
One of the big reasons why a lot of people fail to achieve success in life is because they never decide what it is that they want. Instead, they just follow the crowd and wonder why they lack motivation and drive.
If you ask a young kid what he or she wants to be when they grow up, their answers can sometimes seem unrealistic. They may say something like, “I want to be a superhero.” They don't think twice about their answer because that is the only thing that is important to them. Their belief is so strong that nothing else matters, including others' opinions.
As a result of parental and societal conditioning, a lot of kids end up losing or suppressing the dreams that they had as children. Can you relate? If so, how do you figure out what is important to you?
Blogger and author Scott Berkun suggests that there are “three piles of life” that you need to pay attention to – things that are important, things that are unimportant, and things that are unimportant and distract you from what is important. By getting clear on what those piles look like, you can then shape your life into the experience that you desire.
2. Visualize Your Ideal Life
A lot of people have a burning desire to create the life of their dreams but they don't know how to get it. As a result, they may ruminate on all of the things that are holding them back, instead of focusing on what they can do to achieve success.
This is where visualization becomes a powerful tool to use. Visualization is a mental technique that uses the imagination to attract success into your life. You create your reality. As Albert Einstein once said, Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.”
Once you know what is important to you, start to visualize what your ideal life looks like. Think about where you would want to live, what your days would look like, whom you would spend your time with, and what kind of work you would be doing. When you are visualizing, try to be as specific as possible.
The reality is that, if you can't picture yourself being successful, then chances are you never will be. I encourage you to create a habit of visualizing your future self every single day. Doing so has the power to catapult your level of success in life.
Are you ready to start moving towards the life that you've always dreamed of? Start imagining that you already have it. Seeing is believing.
3. Live Your Life On Purpose
The most important question to ask yourself is, “Why am I here?” Everything in life has a purpose and that includes YOU. I believe that each of us has a unique gift that we are meant to share with the world.
Living your purpose can be exciting and scary at the same time. However, once you have the courage to tap into it, it can bring the highest level of meaning and fulfillment to your life that you once only dreamed was possible.
Not only is finding your purpose good for your soul, but it's also good for your health. In a study that followed 6,000 individuals for 14 years, people who reported having a higher sense of purpose were more likely to live longer than their peers across all age groups. This included younger adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults.
Your purpose is your divine GPS; it guides your decisions and shapes the direction that your life will take. Who is directing your focus? If it isn't you that is doing it, then you may be living someone else's dream. Choose to be who you authentically are. Don't ever dim your light because you are scared of failing or letting other people down.
Now is the time to give yourself permission to play big. You only have one life. Why not maximize it by living your life on purpose? T. Alan Armstrong said it best – “If there is no passion in your life, then have you really lived? Find your passion, whatever it may be. Become it, and let it become you and you will find great things happen FOR you, TO you and BECAUSE of you.”
4. Don't Let Others' Opinions Of You Control Your Reality
I believe that there are two groups of people in this world – those who achieve true success and those who don't. The former are the ones who live out their version of success rather than someone else's.
Your dreams weren't given to you. They are yours and yours only. You may not believe that you can do something because somebody told you that can't. Trust me when I say that anything in life is possible if you believe that it is.
Who is impacting your decisions in life? Are these people uplifting you to greatness or limiting your potential? Do not let others' judgments and opinions of you control your reality. This is your life.
You should value others' opinions. However, don't allow those opinions to dictate your decisions and determine how you should live your life. The fact of the matter is, no matter what you do or say, there will always be haters out there that will try to put you down.
It's your job to silence this noise. Use their negativity as fuel for the fire. Their words are not your truth. Trust in yourself. The only person that you have to prove anything to is the image staring back at you in the mirror.
In the words of Marcus Aurelius, “Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” If you no longer worried about what others thought of you, what would success look like to you?
5. View Success As A Journey, Not A Destination
Have you ever wondered why it is that some people are super successful in life while others are not? Successful people don't quit. Ever. They know that success is a journey of learning and unlearning everything about themselves and the world.
If you become too consumed with the end point of success, you will miss out on all of the beautiful moments that happen along the way. This is why it is so important that you celebrate all the small milestones that you achieve on the journey to fulfilling your dreams. It's your daily habits and choices that matter most.
Achieving success doesn't mean that you have to change something about yourself. Don't get attached to that story. The secret to success is being your authentic self and living out that truth every single day. Did you know that you are already a success? Having the perseverance to pursue what it is that makes you come alive inside is a huge success in and of itself.
Success isn't something that magically shows up at your doorstep one day. Similarly, when you achieve success, it is not the end of the road. Instead of thinking of achievement as something that is constantly out of arms reach, have gratitude for how far you've come and focus on what is already working well in your life.
Be brave enough to define success on your terms.
Take back your inner power and define success on your own terms. Live life for YOU. Go inward and figure out what makes you come alive inside. This is the most precious gift that you can give to yourself and the world. To succeed in life you need to be radically aligned with your true self.
