Ezra Firestone is a leading Ecommerce expert.
While I was at the SellerCon event in Las Vegas I had the opportunity to interview Ezra about his Ecommerce success and how people can create highly profitable businesses built with purpose. Let's dive in!
Do you mind sharing a little bit about yourself and your story?
I think that most people who become entrepreneurs are chasing some form of freedom, whether that's time, location, or financial. In many ways, I can relate. I grew up poor but I always had the goal of generating resources because I wanted to take care of my family and do cool things in the world. Growing up I hustled and played poker.
Poker was really fun, but you stay up all night, sleep all day and you end up hanging out with a lot of degenerates. It wasn't my scene. I grew up in an intentional community which is another way of saying that I was living in a hippy commune. This was a group of people who opted out of the mainstream and decided to live life differently than most folks.
In that community I was exposed to a lot of different viewpoints.
We had conversations around topics like jealousy, money, possessions, and sensuality. All of the stuff that happens in a relationship is what this group was studying and teaching courses on. During this time, I met a guy who was doing life coaching. This was before coaching had penetrated the mainstream. He was selling digitally delivered eBooks on how to start a coaching business online using SEO as his source of visibility.
The cool thing about coaching is that there's not really a governing body. Anyone can be a coach, which is positive and negative. I was grinding all night to make $200 while he was making money online while he slept and was working half the time. I did a trade with him, in that I taught him poker and he taught me SEO. Once I learned how to do that and I saw the opportunities that the Internet could provide, I never looked back.
What are the mindsets that hold people back from getting started in the online business world? Conversely, what mindsets help people thrive?
Fear is a big one; fear of failure, fear of judgment from your social group or your partner, fear that you're going to invest time and energy and it won't work. Trust me, that will happen. Welcome to the game. You will fail a lot. Fear limits people's willingness to jump in.
I get the opportunity to relate with and talk to a lot of entrepreneurs.
When you really get down to it, the ones who haven't fully jumped in are scared. You're right to be scared. It's dangerous, risky, and it takes a lot of patience. However, you have no chance of making it if you don't take a leap of faith. At some point, you've got to change your mindset and jump in.
A lack of investment is a big issue for a lot of people. There's a Spider-Man quote that reads, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” If you flip that around it's truer… “With great responsibility, comes great power.” The interesting thing about help is that it gets better over time because the person that is helping you becomes more skilled.
Give people a way to win. Ask yourself how much you are willing to invest in the people around you and then ask yourself, “Who is currently in my environment that can support me in the achievement of my goals?” When you're not isolated in your own little bubble and have someone whom you can relate to, it will make a huge difference in your life and in your business.
What advice do you have for people when it comes to content marketing?
Most people are just trying to sell a product. That's great for query-based traffic. However, you're never going to make contextual traffic work with that strategy. Facebook and Google have 25,000 data points on you. They know what you buy, who you like, and who your friends are. As advertisers, we can aggregate those data points and build a profile of people whom we want to put an ad in front of.
That's called a contextual ad.
In order to make that work, you need more than a product. You need to have a reason that you're in business, and you need a purpose. I call it – Mission, Story, Purpose. As an example, with Project Life Mastery you are doing more than just selling content. You are attempting to serve a community of people because it is meaningful to you in some way. I can feel it, and people can feel it too.
What advice would you give to someone who is just getting started building an online business?
It's going to take longer than you think. Give yourself more time than you feel you should before you judge the effectiveness of your efforts. Also, be willing to ask for help. Don't be too proud to have mentors. Be vulnerable and transparent about where you are.
It's not about the product you choose or the market you're in. Rather, it's about where you are in your own head and how you are approaching your business. Find people who have been where you want to go and who can help you rise.
Men are taught that being interesting is the strategy in life.
Actually, being interested in other people and your market is what makes you successful. Attention is the greatest commodity. You can wield attention to benefit you and the world. Everyone is so worried about being judged by their social group. Nobody is paying attention to you. Rather, they're all paying attention to themselves. Get out of your head, quit worrying about your performance, and move in the direction of your goals with a positive attitude.
How can people find out more about you and your work?
