I recently attended a 3-day Amazon seller event in Orlando Florida called, SellerCon. While I was there, I had the opportunity to interview Christine, who was one of the speakers at the event.

Under her online brand, Momma Moon Boutique, she creates and manufactures products, like Baby Undersocks, Smart Sheep Wool Dryer Balls, Penguin Pillow Mat, and much more. She started selling these products based on the real-life needs of her and her 4 kids.

Are you ready to learn how this mompreneur created a million dollar Amazon business?

If you are a mom who has the desire to work from home and create more flexibility in your daily life, Christine's story will give you the motivation to take the leap!

Here is a sneak peek of my interview with Christine, where we talk about how she became a successful mompreneur.

Do you want to share a little bit about your story, the online business that you’ve built, and how you got started selling on Amazon?

I started selling on Amazon in 2011, which is a little bit earlier than when a lot of people jumped onboard. In the beginning stages, I just wanted to make some extra cash. I have four kids and I really wanted to be able to work from home. I thought that selling online would be a great way to attain the flexibility that I desired.

At first, I wasn't thinking about how I could make money on Amazon. I just thought that I would build my own website and go from there. My youngest son used to take his socks off all of the time, so the first product that I created was called Baby Undersocks. They were designed to stay on a baby's feet.

They literally attached to a child's pants, kind of like underwear. My son started to wear them and then the neighbors checked them out. People like the product, so I made more. From there, I hired a local cut and sew place to make a couple thousand of them.

I started my own website. I sold a few products here and there, but not daily. It wasn't until I started to sell on Amazon that things took off. I thought, “Is it possible to just sell on Amazon and make money?” It turns out that it is. As soon as I listed my product on Amazon, it started to sell.

I know you’ve got a few products that you sell on Amazon now. Do you mind sharing what those products are?

After I started selling the baby undersocks I thought, “Wow, there's real potential here to add more products.”

Once you get a product going, you hit re-order and you don't need to re-do the photos or the marketing that much.

I decided to launch a second product. I soon became the #1 dry ball seller on Amazon. Back then there wasn't a lot of competition with this product like there is now. In 2015, I added a family party board and I had a lot of success with that product as well.

You spoke at the event about the importance of product creation and innovation. To someone that is just starting to sell on Amazon, do you have any advice on how they can stand out from the competition?

The first thing that I do is write down all of my favorite products that I use during the day, for myself and my kids. From there, I try to think about how I can improve those products, whether that means adding a specific color or changing a size.

It's all about finding a gap in the market.

I like to write down a set of questions related to the products that I want to create. For example, “How can I make something more travel-friendly or cheaper.” You can take an expensive product, add cheaper materials and serve a market that can't afford the high-end version.

Sometimes I like to look at men's products and see if I can make a female-friendly version. Lastly, I like to see how I can differentiate myself by creating a product in a market that has yet to be served.

There are a lot of stay-at-home moms who are looking to the Internet as a way to make extra income. What is your message to the moms out there that are trying to juggle all of the responsibilities that come with being a parent, while also trying to build an online business on the side?

There is a lot of flexibility that comes with having an online business, but you definitely have to utilize all of your dead time. If your baby is napping or on a playdate, it's tempting to do chores or take a nap. However, if you are really serious about starting an online business, you need to set aside time to build it.

In the beginning stages of building my business, I would always be on my computer. I would be writing down product ideas or emailing somebody to find out more information.

I fully utilized all of my free time.

A lot of people tell me that they don't have time to start an Amazon business. You do have time, it's just easy to get caught up doing other things. It's all about focus and making your business your #1 hobby.

What challenges have you faced along your journey?

Our Amazon supplier is based out of Nepal. When Nepal got hit by an earthquake back in 2014, we didn't know if they were going to be okay. Luckily everyone was safe. At that time, we were doing one million dollars in sales. We were able to keep 3-6 months of inventory on hand. Fortunately, they were able to get back up and running before we totally ran out.

A lot of our supplier's employees had become homeless as a result of the earthquake, so we donated money to help them get back on their feet. We are actually going to Nepal for the first time in two weeks, so we will get a chance to meet everyone.

What is the mindset that you have when it comes to dealing with adversity or challenges?

Sometimes you will make mistakes. For example, I wired $30,000 to a scammer. I wasn't making as much money as I am now. Unfortunately, someone hacked into my email and my supplier's email account. He changed their bank account information before it got to me. That was a hard blow to take.

That was a lot of money to lose.

I still owed the company all of that money for the product that they had made for me, so I had to find a way to pay them.

Do you have any advice for people that are looking to start selling on Amazon?

Back when I started in 2011 there weren't a lot of people doing selling on Amazon, or else I didn't know how to connect with people that were. Today, people have so many opportunities to talk to experienced sellers.

They can tell you what mistakes they made so that you don't have to make the same ones.

I've had a lot of other setbacks in my online business. Once I ordered a product and didn't triple check the dimensions. They ended up sending me one thousand of something that was either too small or too big.

I've had those kinds of experiences that I can share with others. I wish I had had sellers who could have told me things so that I didn't have to make so many mistakes.

I'm always happy to share my mistakes with other people.

Connect with people that have been where you want to go. You will save a lot of time and money if you are pointed in the right direction. That is the value of coming to an event like this one.
