I want to share with you why is it imperative that you get out of your comfort zone. It’s easy to get stuck in a comfort zone because it feels safe, stress-free, and stable. We are creatures of habit. However, in reality, a comfort zone isn’t comfortable at all. It is a place that encourages fear, boredom, and stagnation.
Our ability to take risks and step outside of our comfort zones is the way in which we grow and evolve. If we don’t, we will get left behind. If you want to succeed in life, you need to challenge yourself. Why? In the words of Ginny Rometty, “Growth and comfort do not coexist.”
In his book, Self-Renewal: The Individual and the Innovative Society, John Gardner expressed that “We pay a heavy price for our fear of failure…it assures the progressive narrowing of the personality and prevents exploration and experimentation.” The lesson here is that if you want to keep learning, you need to keep failing.

There is a myth in society that comfort should be the main goal in peoples’ lives. I believe that when someone chooses to live a life of comfort, they settle and lack a sense of purpose. As a result, people have been conditioned to believe that the struggles they are experiencing today are only temporary, and on the other side there is nothing but rainbows and butterflies. This is far from true. Comfort is the enemy.
People who adopt this mindset believe that they know everything, which creates arrogance. In turn, they end up closing themselves off to learning new things. The three most dangerous words in the human vocabulary are, “I know that.” When you achieve success in life, it is so important that you remain humble and driven.
The most successful people in the world are always trying to learn and improve. They embrace risk and challenges because they view these experiences as opportunities to stretch themselves. If you get to a point where you believe that you have “made it” in your career, don’t stop growing.
There was a time in my life when I made this mistake. I achieved such a high level of success that I didn’t feel that I had to work hard anymore. Shortly afterward, I was bored and depressed because I didn’t have a sense of purpose. Get out of your comfort zone. Yes, it can be scary and uncomfortable to do something that doesn’t feel natural, but I promise you that on the other side is a sense of aliveness and freedom that is unexplainable.
Never stop making progress towards achieving your goals and becoming the person that you aspire to be. Your highest self demands that you do so. The hardest part is taking the first step, but you will be amazed at how quickly you can adapt and thrive in this new territory. In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” Take a leap of faith and get out of your comfort zone today. Greatness awaits you!
