Can you share how you got into the world of entrepreneurship and how you made the transition from being a professional athlete to building an online business?
I've been in the fitness world my entire life. I became an amateur boxer at the age of 12. In 2009, I was a personal trainer. I worked at Gold's Gym in Long Beach. I was pretty good at my job. After the first year, my goal was to take my clients outside of the gym and train them independently.
I had a list of goals written down that I wanted to achieve. About one year into this, I happened to go back to my book of goals. When I read them over, I realized that I had hit every single one. At that moment, I knew that it was time for me to do the independent thing. Once I figured out how to sell my training programs, I got it.
I was doing 80% of the gyms PT revenue, which allowed me to receive the title of the top personal trainer.
However, I was hardly getting paid anything. They took so much money from me. With that being said, it was still scary quitting that gym and working for myself. I had become a slave to my tiny paycheck. In many ways, I didn't want to shake that boat, but I did.
The first month I made $15,000. That was from $4,000 to $15,000. That's when I know it was working. I started utilizing YouTube to track my clients progress. Instead of just having a before and after picture, I also had videos of when Sarah could only do 1 pull-up, but now she's doing 10 pull-ups. Of course, with her performance increasing, she will look amazing. I'm always performance-based because I know that's how you get real gains.
Also, every now and then I would upload videos of me training. I always made sure that I was in better shape than everyone else. Nobody could out-do me. I'm really competitive like that. If you want to be successful in business, your product has to be good.
In my business, I am the product.
When people give me credit for being a good business person I don't think that I am. I'm just a normal guy who happens to do things that I'm good at and that I love. That's why things always work out for me. Around this time, Instagram came on the scene. Social media enabled more people to access my work. Over time, people started to share my workouts with others. This is when my business started to really take off.
My training is quite unconventional. That's what makes people gravitate towards me. However, in 2012, my bandwidth was exceeding my capacity for training people. I was turning away clients. I had to start doing semi-privates so that I could train groups of people at the same time. It was becoming too much.
During this time, I started taking supplements to elevate my mood and maximize my energy. Unfortunately, I experienced weird side effects from them. I started to write down the ingredients on the products that I liked. After that, I started to research each ingredient. There was no intention of starting a company when I did the research. Rather, it was only so that I could make my own products. Doing so would allow me to eliminate the bad side effects.
At this time, my name was becoming a buzzword in the fitness community.
People were reaching out to me for brand deals and sponsorships. Someone recommended that I do my own supplement line. I met up with a guy and he told me that he could help with the manufacturing and backend up stuff. I agreed, as long as the formula stayed the same. We shook hands and came up with an agreement. That's how my company started. In my first month, I made $3,000. Every month, that number kept increasing, and it still does to this day.
I've always been someone that is passionate about health and brain functionality. I had a desire for something bigger and better with my business. That's when myself and two good friends of mine came up with the idea of launching Ambrosia Collective. The focus was on making the best supplement company ever, made up of creative ingredients and formulas. I decided to sell my company and went all-in with Ambrosia.
What was your first product, and what other types of products do you guys sell?
The very first product was Mental Jewels. Ever since I saw the movie, Limitless, I wanted to create this product. It's all herbal and healthy. We get emails time and time again from people that were once hooked on Aderol that aren't anymore. Mental Jewels doesn't just give you a brain boost. It also helps to repair your brain and make it healthier. It's something that you have to take every day, but it's an amazing product.
We also have the product, Ritual. This is similar to a keto coffee. It's an all-natural, non-dairy creamer. It delivers exogenous ketones to the brain and body and helps to put your body into a state of ketosis.
For those who do intermittent fasting, Ritual keeps you satiated for most of the day until it's time to eat.
For those who don't like coffee, we've made a version of it that is similar to orange juice. The beautiful thing about our products is that they are refreshing and taste good.
Do you mind sharing what your mindset was when it came to differentiating yourself in the supplement industry?
It wasn't a conscious thing. It's just how I am. I don't follow the crowd, ever. With that being said, I'm not naive. I don't go into spaces where I don't think I can succeed. If I do something, I'm confident that I will do well.
I tend to have my own ideas about how I want to communicate and promote a specific product.
With Ambrosia Collective, it seems difficult to promote products that aren't popular, but for me it's easy. I educate people about what it is and why it's important. That's exactly what I used to do when I was a personal trainer. For myself, marketing is easy because my products are important for people's health and well-being. Furthermore, there's not a lot of people who are selling what I offer.
What was the process that you guys went through for launching products?
We started with one product and it did really well. When things started to pick up, we decided to keep going and bring on more products.
I always recommend starting with one product and seeing how it does. Gauge the market. If you aren't selling, you can always pull out. This is what we did. That way you aren't investing a ton of money into something and potentially losing your life savings. Everything that I've done so far has always been with my own money.
How did you develop your strong work ethic, or did you always have it?
My father put the battery in my back and my mother treated me like a prince when I was young. This is why I have so much confidence. I was always good at the things that I did, in terms of academics and sports. Life wasn't perfect by any means, but I always felt special.
Not in the sense that I was supposed to be a famous person.
Rather, I've always been a confident person. That's why I move the way I move and think the way I think. On top of that, I was an only child which gave me a lot of space for creativity. I was forced to figure things out on my own rather than following in a sibling's footsteps.
What is your mindset when it comes to overcoming adversities and challenges?
In 2015, I was in the process of opening up a gym in Miami. I ended up taking on a partner that turned out to be too good to be true. Our gym was a great success, but my business partner was involved in a lot of shady things that I didn't know about. I rarely go into business with people that I don't know.
In 2017, we ended up closing the gym.
I wanted to re-negotiate everything with the landlord but commercial real estate in Miami is ridiculously expensive. It was a mess. It put such a bad taste in my mouth. I've learned to always follow my intuition.
What is your mindset when it comes to failure, and what do you think it takes to be a successful entrepreneur?
Failure is such a fatal word. There is no failure. I don't really like to subscribe to that mindset. Instead, I see everything with a glass half-full. I like to think of failure as market research. You need to figure out why something doesn't work, pick it apart, and then leave it alone, or reconstruct it in the right way. You've got to be tough and have thick skin in the business world. If something doesn't work, suck it up and keep working.
We all have the same 24 hours in a day.
Once those hours are gone, you can't get them back. That's why you need to spend your time wisely. I know that I'm going to die one day so I need to do as much as I can so that when I'm gone, everything is good.
What advice would you give to someone that has a 9 to 5 job, but has the desire to transition towards becoming an entrepreneur?
For the people that want to transition from 9 to 5 to entrepreneurship, happy hour can't matter. When I stopped hanging out with my friends is when things started clicking for me. I still love these guys. I never see them though because they are doing taco Tuesdays still and I'm doing my thing. Time is your most valuable asset and commodity. Use it wisely.
Don't quit your job if what you want to do isn't bringing in money yet. Do it on the side and work whenever you have free time. Start generating money. If it's enough for you to cover your necessities, then go for it. You will either sink or swim. The payoff is financial freedom. What I used to make in one year, I now make in one week. It's real. There are so many multi-millionaires on the Internet today. A lot of them started from scratch and so can you.
What advice can you share with those people that already have a 7-figure business, but want to scale-up even further?
A successful business is always efficient and smooth. Building a solid team is very important. As soon as I hit $100,000 in one month, the growing pains started. I had to buy more inventory and hire more staff.
It's important that you keep re-investing your money into your company.
More importantly, always make sure that your product is high-quality. I've always had an easy time selling my products because they are products that I personally use and love. Qualify yourself and your services to be the best that they can be in your market. Lastly, work your ass off.
