Success isn't for everyone.
Don't get me wrong… I believe that ANYONE can be successful, but not everyone will do what it takes. A lot of people have all of the information that they need to be successful, and yet they still don't succeed. Thus, a good strategy is not enough to achieve your goals. Tony Robbins says that success is achieved through a plan that is 80 percent psychological and 20 percent strategic.
Many factors make up your psychology. The biggest and most important one being commitment. Successful people are committed to achieving their goals. If they can't find a way, they make a way. They don't allow their life circumstances to dictate their actions in life.
If you want something badly enough and you are truly committed to doing whatever it takes, you will be successful. The question always comes back to this – how badly do you want success?
I'm not going to lie.. the path to success isn't easy. Few people are willing to pay the price. If you're not achieving your goals, the simple answer as to why is because you don't want it badly enough. The only way to transform your life is to commit to making your “shoulds” into “musts”.
A lot of people have “shoulds.” They want success if it's easy, convenient, and doesn't require a lot of hard work. Success has to be on the terms that they've defined for themselves. Unfortunately, this mentality won't get you far in life.
If you're always looking for reasons or excuses as to why you're not achieving your goals, you will become a victim. You will deflect responsibility elsewhere, instead of holding yourself accountable.
The one common denominator when it comes to achieving your goals is YOU.
At a certain point, you have to point the finger back at yourself and say, “I am solely responsible for my actions.” That is how you take back control of your life, instead of being a victim of it. Success is not a matter of ability. Rather, it's a matter of motivation and commitment.
So, the question is… how do you increase commitment to your goals? Here are four tips that can help you do so.
Tip #1: Define The Compelling Reasons To Achieve Your Goals
The more reasons that you have, the more motivation that you will have to achieve the goals that you set for yourself. Whenever you set a goal, you need to know what your why is. There are two types of reasons – pleasurable ones and painful ones. Pain is a powerful short-term motivator. However, pleasure is the best long-term motivator.
I believe that everything that we want to achieve in life has a why behind it. The more reasons that you have to achieve a goal, the higher the likelihood will be that you achieve it. Your why is your internal motivation. Until you can identify what this is, you will struggle to figure out how to turn your dreams into a reality.
I challenge you to come up with 100 reasons why you want to achieve your goals. It may take a little bit of time, but I encourage you to stretch yourself and go deep with this process. At least 10 of the reasons you reflect upon will drive you more than others will.
Highlight or underline your 10 reasons and then commit to reading them every day to yourself as part of your morning ritual. If you want to take it one step further, read these reasons three times a day.
Constantly remind yourself why you wanted to achieve your goal. When you lose motivation or face adversity in life, go back to your list of reasons. Your why will get you back on track.
Tip #2: Define The Painful Consequences of Not Achieving Your Goals
Human beings are driven to seek pleasure and avoid pain. When it comes to your compelling reasons for achieving your goals, reflect upon how your life will be if you don't take action. Use your pain as motivation. The more pain reasons that you have, the better.
Keep in mind that if it feels uncomfortable answering this question, it should! Your biggest successes in life will be found outside of your comfort zone. The sooner that you accept this reality, the sooner you will get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
When you have strong enough reasons for why you want to achieve something, you will still act despite whatever is preventing you from taking action. The solution is either to overcome your fear and/or raise your level of commitment.
When it comes to achieving your goals, you also want to make sure that you have a rewards and punishment system in place. Oftentimes, people don't achieve something because they don't have a consequence for it. Every time you don't follow through on a commitment, you let yourself down and lose confidence.
A consequence is a powerful motivator. If you don't do what you say you're going to do, what will happen? As an example, let's say that you commit to waking up every morning at 7 am, for 5 days a week.
If you don't follow through with this commitment, the consequence may be that you have to go jump in the cold ocean on a winter's day. The idea behind this process is that by not taking action, some kind of pain will follow suit.
Tip #3: Reward Yourself For Achieving Your Goals
On the flip side, you also want to make sure that you're rewarding yourself when you achieve something that you set out to do. When you celebrate your progress, you will feel positive emotions. In turn, your brain will start linking pleasure to accomplishing something, thereby encouraging you to achieve more.
Tip #4: Share Your Goals Publicly
A powerful way to increase your commitment to achieving your goals is to be accountable to someone else. When you're only accountable to yourself, it's easy to let yourself off the hook. This is why it's best to share your goals publicly.
I suggest getting an accountability buddy or group, a therapist, or a coach who will hold you accountable for following through. A great resource that I recommend for getting advice and accountability from specialized coaches is a website called Coach.Me.
This is the secret to success.
I hope these tips empower you to achieve your goals. We all want to live a successful life. However, it all comes down to how badly you want success.
If you are willing to commit to doing what others are not, there is no limit to what you can achieve in this lifetime. Stop wishing for a better life and start taking massive action to create the life that you desire.
