The book Unlimited Power by Anthony Robbins is a book written by the famous self-help Guru when he was only 25 years old and remains to be one of his best pieces of work. It’s quite remarkable to know that at the mere age of 25, Tony Robbins had achieved financial freedom, was living in a castle, married the woman of his dreams, had 4 children, travelled the world speaking to thousands of people, coached and been around many of the worlds most influential leaders, and more importantly had achieved an incredible level of fulfillment.
I’ve always been a huge fan of Tony Robbins, ever since I discovered his work when I was 17 years old. He turned my life around from being a shy, insecure, depressed boy to a more confident, successful and happy man. I’ve been through almost all of his books, programs and seminars, and have written reviews on his Unleash The Power Within and Date With Destiny seminars. He’s changed my life and continues to be a role model and mentor for me.
In Unlimited Power, one of the most powerful concepts that Tony speaks about is The Power of Modelling. It’s a concept that he uses from NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) that he learned from the founders of NLP, John Grinder and Richard Bandler. The story is that John Grinder and Richard Bandler realized that every human being wants to change something in their lives. Both Grinder and Bandler ended up finding out the most successful people in the world at producing change – top therapists, psychologists, hypnotists, etc – and they discovered what they did. Eventually, they came across some powerful teachers, one in particular is Dr. Milton Erikson, who was known as a powerful hypnotherapist at the time.
What Grinder and Bandler learned, along with the young Anthony Robbins, is that if anyone is able to achieve a certain result in life, then another person can achieve that result too – whether it be make a million dollars, lose 100 pounds, overcome depression, or attract the relationship of your dreams. The way to achieve the same results as someone who is already successful is to model them. If you model their beliefs, their thoughts, the way they use their body, the way they speak, and what they specifically did to get to where they are now, you can then take those same steps and actions and achieve the exact same results.
Reading books, going to seminars, and learning from coaches or mentors is the process of modelling. You’re learning what THEY did to achieve where they are (the principles they used), and you’re applying them to your life as well. It’s an incredibly powerful process that fast-tracks your results in life. If you want to achieve anything in your life, then find someone that is similar to you who achieved what you’re after, and simply do what they did. Why re-invent the wheel? As Jim Rohn says, “Success leaves clues!”
In the Unlimited Power, Tony teaches many NLP techniques and patterns. Techniques such as how to destroy a habit or something that is holding you back. He teaches how to use NLP, as well as your your sub-modalities, to motivate you or to change your beliefs. Awhile back I put out a video based on some NLP techniques that Tony Robbins uses to change any behaviour or pattern, called 3 Easy Steps To Change Any Negative Behaviour Or Emotional State and it has worked wonders in my life.
The Ultimate Success Formula
Robbins also first introduces his Ultimate Success Formula in this book, which has since been modified and updated as mentioned in the Unleash The Power Within Review. But, at the time the formula he was teaching consisted of 4 simple steps:
This simply means to know the outcome that you’re after. The more specific, the more likely you are to achieve it.
Take consistent, massive action towards the outcome you desire.
3) Determine Response
Develop the sensory acuity to recognize the response that you’re getting to determine whether you are moving towards your outcome.
4) Adapt And Change Until Desired Result Is Achieved
Develop the flexibility to change your actions until your desired result is achieved.
Since Unlimited Power, Tony Robbins has added a 2nd step that fits in before Action, which is to have a Purpose. He talks about how you need to have REASONS to follow through and achieve something, which is the fuel behind why you want to achieve the outcome. This is something that I talk about in my blog post on How To ACTUALLY Achieve Your Goals that has helped me reach most of the goals that I’ve set for myself.
There were many elements of Unlimited Power that I really enjoyed, including his teachings of state and of health. But, in particular, I enjoyed his 7 beliefs that foster excellence, which are:
1) Everything happens for a reason and a purpose and it serves us.
2) There is no such thing as failure, only results.
3) Whatever happens, take responsibility.
4) You do not have to understand everything to use everything.
5) People are your greatest resource.
6) Work is play.
7) There’s no abiding success without commitment.
All I can say further is that it’s an amazing self-help book that also introduces many NLP concepts that will help improve the quality of your life. I definetly recommend getting this book and going through it. In fact, anything you pick up and go through of Tony Robbins is quite amazing and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
